History
Angus MacInnis was born on Prince Edward Island on 02 September, 1884, where he lived until moving to Vancouver in 1908. He worked as a milkman and streetcar driver with the British Columbia Electric Railway, as well as venturing into local politics as a member of the Vancouver council from 1926-1930. Considered a leading socialist in B.C., in 1930 he was elected as an MP representing the riding of Vancouver-South for the Independent Labour party. He then served three terms from 1935-1953 as the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) representative for Vancouver-East, before finishing his political career as the CCF MP for Vancouver-Kingsway from 1953-1957. Angus retired from his position in 1957 due to chronic ill health.
Along with long-time associate J.S. Woodsworth, Angus was a co-founder of the CCF party in 1932, being largely responsible for merging the Socialist Party of Canada into the fold and establishing a strong base for the CCF to operate in British Columbia. He was a vehement supporter for the rights of Asian-Canadians both before and after World War II – arguing strongly in favour of their right to vote until it was granted in 1949. His personal platform also included labour rights and benefits, civil liberties and unemployment assistance for veterans returning from war. He was also known for his continual efforts to distance any associations between the CCF and the Communist Party of Canada.
In 1931 Angus developed a relationship with Grace Woodsworth, who was living in Ottawa acting as her father’s (and in part, Angus’s secretary). They married in January of 1932, with press agencies lauding the union of prominent socialist families. They each supported the other’s political career, with Grace pausing hers briefly at the end of Angus’s life to care for him. Angus MacInnis passed away in 1964.
