History
Philippe Etter was born on September 12, 1935 in London, England. He attended Trinity College of Music and started his career with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. After moving to London, England, he was the principal viola with Sadler's Wells from 1962-1965, and with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1966-1969. In 1969, the Purcell String Quartet recruited him to replace the departing Simon Streatfeild. In Vancouver, Philippe was principal viola with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra from 1969-1973, and with the CBC Vancouver Orchestra starting from 1991 on. After the dissolution of the Purcell String Quartet in 1991, Philippe continued to perform professionally, and was a much sought-after teacher in the community. In his later years, Philippe became a silversmith and made jewelry, exhibiting his creations at local fairs and musical events. He died in Vancouver on March 21, 2016.
