History
Ian (Chalmers) Hampton was born in London, England on March 13, 1935. He studied cello with Joan Dickson, William Pleeth, and with Paul Tortelier, among others, before gaining a seat with the London Symphony Orchestra, which he held from 1956-1959. From 1959-1965, he was the cellist for the Edinburgh String Quartet; and from 1965-1966, he taught at the University of California at Davis, San Francisco Institute of the Arts, and Sacramento State College, while also serving as cellist for the Oakland Symphony Orchestra and the Persinger String Trio. Hampton moved to Vancouver in 1966 to become principal cellist for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (1967-1973), and the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra. In recognition of his contribution to music in Canada, Hampton was named a Canadian Music Centre ambassador in 2009, and received an honorary degree from Simon Fraser University in 2011.
