Joseph Peleg was born in Debrecen, Hungary on September 22, 1946. He received undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto, where he studied with Lorand Fenyves, and a Masters degree from Indiana University, where he worked with Josef Gingold. In 1977, the Purcell String Quartet recruited him to Vancouver, but his tenure with them was cut short due to obligatory service in the Israeli army. After completing his service, he moved to Toronto, where he spent the remainder of his career.
