History

Simon Nicholas Streatfeild was born on October 5, 1929 in Windsor, England. From 1946 to 1950, he studied viola with Simon Streatfeild at the Royal Conservatory of Music, from which he proceeded to play in the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also principal viola of the Sadler’s Wells Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, and was a founding member of the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields chamber orchestra. Streatfeild moved to Canada in 1965, where he worked with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in various roles from until 1977. During this time he also served as a founding member of Baroque Strings of Vancouver; the conductor and director of the Vancouver Bach Choir; and a founding member of the Purcell String Quartet. Streatfeild was awarded the Canadian Music Council Medal in 1987, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. He passed away on December 7, 2019.
