Custodial history

Materials were in the possession of Charles Doering, Hat Creek Ranch's owner from 1910 until his death in 1927. Custody passed within the family eventually to Doering's great-great-grandson, Jerrold Dennis Mutter, who donated the records to SFU Archives in 2024.

Scope and content

Series consists of records originally in the possession of Charles Doering relating to the business affairs of Hat Creek Ranch. Doering purchased the site in 1910 and oversaw the expansion of the property and its ranching operations (see the Hat Creek Ranch administrative history for more information). Records include financial ledger pages (file 1) and correspondence (file 2).

Terms governing use, reproduction, and publication

The application of copyright is uncertain. Some of the business records may not meet the test of originality to attract copyright protection; the correspondence is subject to copyright, but given the age of the records it is possible that the term of protection in some cases has expired (the term would typically be life of the author plus 70 years). If copyright does apply, it is not always clear who the actual copyright holder would be. The donor, Jerrold Dennis Mutter, did not assert or transfer copyright to SFU Archives. Given these uncertainties, the Archives treats these records as subject to third-party copyright and makes copies available under the fair dealing provisions of Canada's Copyright Act. Researchers wishing to use copies for a non-fair dealing (e.g. commercial) purpose should undertake their own copyright analysis and make their own determination of risk.
