Musical works

File consists of musical compositions and class notes from Wah's student days.

File consists of cards, chapbooks, broadsides, pamphlets by various authors, including Wah. Contains works of others and also some works by Wah.

General instruction records

Sub-series consists of materials relating to Wah's work as instructor at various institutions, including Selkirk College and the University of Calgary. Records include pedagogical resources, as well as instructional materials not related to one specific course, or where the course is not known.

Event recordings

File consists of audio and video recordings of events and interviews featuring Fred Wah.

[Diamond grill research]

File consists of research materials relating to Chinese immigration, Chinese culture, crime, and gambling. Includes an essay by David R. Williams, along with related correspondence from Williams, about the case of Earnest Chenoweth, an eight year old boy was tried for murdering a Chinese cook who was working at their home in 1900.

File consists of various notebooks containing notes relating to courses taught by Wah at the University of Calgary.

Records include course material and student assignments, instructional resources used by Wah, and administrative records created through Wah's employment at these various academic institutions.

Fonds consists of correspondence, written works and published materials by Wah and other writers, photographs, and other records accumulated by Wah during his lifetime, arising from both personal and professional activities. Records include poems, essays and reviews; journals and notebooks; book manuscripts; teaching materials; travel records; administrative records; and promotional material for conferences, workshops and other events.

The records in this fonds have been arranged into the following eight series: Correspondence (1960-2013); Writings and related records (1961-2012); Research records, works of others, and works about Wah ([196-]-2012); Academic work and instruction records (1927, [196-]-2005); Events and travel records (1965- 2013); Professional service and activities records ([ca. 1961]-2013); Residency records (1981-2007); and Personal records ([196-?]-[199-?]).

Writings and related records

Series consists of works written by Wah as well as other types of records relating to Wah's writing. It contains writing drafts, manuscript pages, and published works of Wah's, as well as related records such as notes, correspondence, research records, and reviews of Wah’s works written by others.

The records in this series have been arranged into the following three sub-series: Diamond grill records, Faking it records, and General records.

General records

Sub-series consists of records relating to Wah's various writings and publications, such as writing drafts, manuscript pages, notes, correspondence, and copies of writings in their published form. Includes records relating to Wah's poetry, essays, reviews, as well as writings that are part of collaborative artistic projects. Several files contain records relating to the books "Music at the Heart of Thinking," published by Red Deer College Press in 1987, and "is a door," published by Talonbooks in 2010.

Essays : Typescripts and manuscripts

Essays written by Wah when he was a university student, including essays written for a creative writing class given by Robert Creeley, which have Creeley's comments.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence to and from Wah, relating to both personal and professional activities. Includes correspondence between Wah and other writers and poets, between Wah and publishers, friends, and professional acquaintances. Correspondents include George Bowering, Robert Creeley, Lionel Kearns, Ron Loewinsohn, Charles Olson, Michael Ondaatje, Raymond Souster, Warren Tallman, Audrey Thomas, and Phyllis Webb.

[Student notebooks]

File consists of two notebooks from Wah’s days as a student at the university of British Columbia, containing course notes.
