General planning and research newspaper clippings, notes, and photographs

Sub-series consists of general material relating to the planning and execution of actions such as unionization, rallies, or strikes, and research into working conditions and workers’ housing. Included is material pertaining to the Okanagan Farmworkers Group, collected by the Canadian Farmworkers Union as it investigated the possibility of organizing farmworkers and orchard workers in the Okanagan. Records include newspaper clippings and research materials, notes, and photographs of mushroom farms.

Photographs, legal records, and correspondence relating to complaints, strikes, and rallies

Sub-series consists of photographs, legal documents, correspondence, and other records relating to individual farmworkers’ complaints, strikes, and the union’s participation in numerous rallies and protests. Records include numerous photographs of strikes and rallies, and an audio recording of a protest.

Convention and meeting minutes, photographs, and other records

Sub-series contains programs, notes, minutes, photographs, and other material from the Canadian Farmworkers Union’s annual conventions. Also included are records from Farm Workers’ Organizing Committee and Canadian Farmworkers Union public meetings, including photographs, speaking notes, and flyers; publicity records from CFU information meetings held by support committees across Canada; minutes and planning notes from CFU staff retreats; and programs and photographs from external meetings and conventions attended by CFU members, including those of the United Farm Workers of America, the BC Federation of Labour, the Canadian Labour Congress, the Manitoba Farm Workers Association, and the Indian People’s Association in North America.

Reports

Sub-series consists of reports and briefs by the Canadian Farmworkers Union, its members, and colleagues on subjects including workers’ rights, workplace safety, and the history and activities of the CFU. Most of the reports were prepared for submission to government bodies such as the Workers’ Compensation Board and BC Human Rights Commission, political parties, or other organizations.

General administrative records

Sub-series consists of a scrapbook and other records relating to the Canadian Farmworkers Union’s chronicling of its own history, photographs of staff and the CFU office, banners displayed at conventions and other events, and other general administrative material.

Minutes and executive reports

Sub-series consists of minutes from Farm Workers’ Organizing Committee meetings as well as both national and regional (Local 1) meetings of the Canadian Farmworkers Union, internal meeting notes by various union members, and executive reports.

English as a Second Language (ESL) training materials and photographs

Sub-series consists of records relating to English as a Second Language (ESL) programs run by the Canadian Farmworkers Union, particularly the ESL Crusades, which customized English learning to farmworkers’ specific needs and brought the program to workers in their homes. Records include tutors’ manuals, educational materials, reports on the success of the ESL programs, photographs of ESL graduation events, and a photo book depicting farmworkers studying English.

General programming correspondence, photographs, and educational material

Sub-series consists of funding information, correspondence, and other planning material relating to Canadian Farmworkers Union programs such as educational programs and awareness campaigns. Records include grant applications, photographs of educational events, and an educational slide presentation with audio cassette soundtrack.

Project files and photographs

Sub-series consists of proposals, reports, correspondence, and photographs relating to projects both internal and external, undertaken or contributed to by the Canadian Farmworkers Union and its members. These projects include cultural events, educational programs, photography projects and exhibits, and documentary videos, as well as research-based awareness projects. Records include production and event photographs, planning documents, and reports.

Records in this sub-series include material relating to the films A Time to Rise (Uthan da Vaila) (1981), produced and directed by Anand Patwardhan and Jim Munro with assistance from the National Film Board (NFB), which documented the history of the farmworkers’ struggle and the Canadian Farmworkers Union; Farmworkers Zindabad! (1985), written and directed by Craig Berggold and Sukhwant Hundal, which dramatized the Hoss Farming Company strike of 1984; and To Pick is Not to Choose (1985), directed by John Greyson for Tolpuddle Farm Labour Information Centre in Ontario. Also included are records relating to the photography exhibits “A Time to Change: South Asian Farmworkers of the Fraser Valley” (originally created in 1983 and exhibited numerous times) and “I would like to tell you a story… Health & Safety Regulations NOW!” (1986) by Craig Berggold. The sub-series also includes records of a health and safety campaign as well as the Technology Impact Program (TIP), a research project which gathered information about pesticide use on berry farms in BC.

Meeting minutes, correspondence, photographs, and other records relating to collaboration with other organizations

Sub-series consists of minutes, correspondence, reports, and photographs relating to projects undertaken by members of the Canadian Farmworkers Union in collaboration with other unions, organizations, or government agencies. Such collaborations included the BC Federation of Labour’s Human Rights Committee and Occupational Health and Safety Committee, the Farm and Ranch Safety and Health Agency (FARSHA), Operation Solidarity, the Pesticide Registration Review, the Workers’ Compensation Board Agricultural Sub-Committee, and the Workers’ Compensation Group. Also included are scripts and photographs of the Vancouver Sath theatre group’s workers’ rights-themed plays.

Pesticides subject files and photographs

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Canadian Farmworkers Union’s research and advocacy of pesticide education and safety, including chemical information, publications, and educational materials. Records include newspaper clippings and research materials, correspondence, reports, and reference photographs. Educational materials in the file include a slide presentation on pesticide safety.

Occupational health and safety subject files and photographs

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Canadian Farmworkers Union’s research and advocacy of occupational health and safety awareness and legislation, including correspondence, briefs prepared for government, newspaper clippings, and reference materials. Records also include awareness posters, blueprints of worker housing, educational materials, and photographs of child workers on farms.

Labour and rights movements subject files

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Canadian Farmworkers Union’s connections to and support of other labour and rights movements, including women’s rights, labour rights, and other agricultural workers’ organizations. Records include briefs and reports, newspaper clippings, and a Manitoba Farm Workers Association banner.

General subject files

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Canadian Farmworkers Union’s research and advocacy of numerous issues including working conditions, workers in other countries, and minority groups. Records include newspaper clippings, research material, and correspondence

Programming and project reports, correspondence, and photographs

Sub-series consists of records relating to projects undertaken by the Deol Society, including ESL classes, the Health Improvement Project (which entailed the production of the film Caught in a World of Pesticides, produced by Mae Burrows and Helena Cynamon), and the production of the film Kicking the Habit. Records include project-specific grant applications, project descriptions, progress reports, as well as photographs of the production of Caught in a World of Pesticides.

Correspondence

Sub-series consists of general internal correspondence as well as correspondence between the Canadian Farmworkers Union and media, other unions, and members.

Publications, publicity records, and ephemera

Sub-series consists of editions of the Canadian Farmworkers Union newspaper The Farmworker, newspaper clippings about the union and its activities, posters and leaflets on a variety of subjects, and press releases. Records also include a recording of a radio program about the Canadian Farmworkers Union, CFU logo lapel pins, and photographs of events.
