Daphne Marlatt Fonds

Fonds consists of records created or accumulated by Daphne Marlatt through her personal and professional activities, predominantly after the year 1990. Records document her activities as a writer of poetry and prose, an editor, and as a teacher of writing and literature, and include manuscripts, notes, research records, correspondence, photographs, grant applications, reviews, and audio and video recordings of poetry readings.

The fonds has been arranged into the following eleven series: Background research records ([ca. 1965-2000]), Fiction - poetry records (1958-2014), Fiction - drama records (2000-2011), Non-fiction works records (1975-2008), Awards and grants records ([ca. 1965-2012]), Correspondence with publishers ([ca. 1977-2013]), Professional activities records (1983-2013), Teaching records (1973-2010), Electronic records and other media (1974-2012), Personal records (1966-2014), and Personal and professional correspondence (1961-2014).

Personal records

Series consists of records relating to Marlatt's personal activities, including some works of others and responses to her writings. Records include correspondence, writings, land title documents, photographs, newspaper clippings, and brochures.

Legal documents for house on Salt Spring called “Glimmering” 1986, 1994-1995

File contains land title documents, photographs and correspondence related to selling a house on Salt Spring Island owned by Daphne Marlatt and Betsy Warland.

The photographs were originally in an envelope labelled “photos of ‘Glimmering’, SSI, our home 1984 to 1994 summer". They are all colour panoramas.

File consists of 7 poetry broadsides, many produced by Co-op Press. Includes the poem "Imagine: a town" by Marlatt, from her book "Steveston," as well as poems by Sam Hamill, Bob Rose, Lew Welch, Gerry Gilbert, and John Marshall.

Misc. documents for writing

File consists of newspaper, magazine, and journal articles, as well as promotional publications (ex. brochures) and notes relating to a variety of subjects, including the Montreal massacre of 1989 and the history of Chinese Canadians.

Essays on my work

File consists of articles from the journal “Kyoto: Perspectives from Asia,” and in “The Bulletin: A journal of Japanese Canadian community, history and culture” relating to Marlatt’s work “The Gull,” as an article from the journal “Canadian Poetry” about her book “Ana Historic.”

Personal and professional correspondence

Series consists of correspondence created or received by Marlatt for personal and professional purposes. The correspondence is with family, friends, and professional colleagues, as well as political authorities on a variety of issues important to Marlatt.
