Government

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's liaison with provincial and federal government bodies. Activities documented include meetings with Ministry officials, and advocacy of the university's views on government policy. Records include correspondence, discussion papers, briefs, speeches, meeting minutes, and government press releases and wide-distribution memoranda.

Vice-President, Financial Services

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the Vice-President, Finance (VP Financial Services after 1988), with university departments during the periods in which they reported to Financial Services, and with unions representing non-faculty staff on campus. The correspondence begins shortly after the appointment of E. Scott to Vice-President, Finance in 1984, and continues with Scott's successors. Activities and topics documented include organization of the Financial Services portfolio; policy development and implementation, including budget, tuition fee, staff study leave and strike policy; payroll, accounting, capital planning; development of the administration information system for payroll and personnel; and joint meetings, consultations, and negotiations between the university and the Administrative and Professional Staff Association (APSA), the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU), and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Records include correspondence and reports; budget applications, capital plans, and financial statements; and meeting agendas, minutes and supporting papers.

Vice-President, Research

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the Vice-President, Research / Information Systems (VP Research after 1990), records relating to SFU research institutes and external granting agencies, and correspondence with university departments during the periods in which they reported to the VP Research, including the University Archives, Computing Services, the University Library and Bookstore, the Animal Care Facility, and the University / Industry Liaison Office. The correspondence begins with the appointment of Tom Calvert as the first Vice-President, Research / Information Systems in 1985 and continues with Calvert's successors. Note that in 1985 the Office carried forward a number of pre-1985 files relating to research centres and institutes and integrated these into the new series. Activities and topics documented include organization of the VP Research portfolio; development and implementation of university research policy; research grants and professorships, and correspondence with granting agencies, including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and the Science Council; records relating to research centres and institutes, including unsuccessful proposals; development of the student information system (SIMON); and the deliberations and activities of a number of university committees including the SFU / Canada Foundation for Innovation Steering Committee, the University Publications Committee, the President's Research Grant Committee, the University Radiology Safety Committee, and the University Computing Advisory Committee. Records include correspondence and reports; policies, drafts, and working papers; research centre proposals, applications, agreements, budgets, and annual reports; research grant proposals, summaries, and awards lists; contracts and agreements; and communiqués and press releases.

New and emergent programs

Sub-series consists of records relating to planning for the budget requirements of new and proposed academic programs, including proposals that were not successful. Records include correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, program proposals and curricula, comments by external reviewers, and budget estimates and calculations.

Contingency

Sub-series consists of records relating to one-time allocations to university departments from the Vice-President, Academic's contingency fund account. Records include correspondence, requests and authorizations, cheque requisition and budget transfer forms, and contingency fund account statements.

Federal government

Sub-series consists of records relating to federal granting agencies, the funding of SFU research chairs, and research grants awarded to SFU faculty. Records include correspondence, proposals, applications, letters of award, agreements, lists of award recipients, news releases, and printed reference material circulated by the granting agencies.

University matters - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the President, other SFU Vice-Presidents, and the administrative departments that reported to them, as well as correspondence relating to university-wide matters in general. Activities and topics documented include liaison with the federal and provincial governments, budget planning, tuition fees, university reorganization, legal advice, liaison with other senior administrators and other university administrative departments, and relations with non-faculty union and employee associations. University Services / Student Services - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the senior administrator responsible for student services and with university administrative departments during periods in which they reported to that position. Responsibility for student services was reorganized several times over the period covered by this series, and the records include correspondence with the Dean of Student Affairs (1969-1971), the Vice-President, University Services (1971-1977), and the Director of Student Services (1977-1980). Activities and topics documented include the administrative organization of the portfolio; budget planning; liaison with the Simon Fraser Student Society; and development of student services programs including financial aid, scholarships, day care, residence and housing, health services, and employment and career services. Series consists of records relating to the university's finances and budget. Series consists of records relating to matters affecting teaching and faculty staff, including librarians and lab instructors. Activities and topics documented include development of the university's academic policies and procedures; faculty appointments, salaries and economic benefits; renewal, tenure and promotion; leave, retirement and immigration; and negotiations and consultations with the Simon Fraser University Faculty Association (SFUFA) and the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU). Series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the university faculty Deans and academic departments. Activities and topics documented include development, implementation and interpretation of academic policies; appointments, sabbaticals, leaves, salaries, renewal, tenure and promotion; disputes, grievances, and investigations; external reviews, internal administration, and reorganizations of faculties and departments; academic planning and program proposals; budget, funding, space planning, special equipment and facilities needs; and the activities of affiliated research centres and scholarly journals. Records include correspondence, reports, external reviews, curriculum and program proposals, budget proposals and estimates, meeting agendas and minutes, agreements, legal advice, planning documents, and research centre constitutions, financial statements and annual reports.

Series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's committee work, including participation or correspondence with Senate committees, Board of Governors committees, other standing and ad hoc university committees and task forces, search committees for senior university administrators, and external (non-SFU) committees. Records include correspondence, reports, and policies and procedures; meeting agendas, minutes, and supporting papers; terms of reference, and memberships lists; policies and procedures; and some case files.

Administrative departments - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the Vice-President, Administration and with university administrative departments during periods in which they reported to the VP Administration, including the Registrar's Office, the Bursar's Office, Personnel, the Computing Centre, Physical Plant and Planning, Ancillary Services, and Athletics and Recreational Services. The series generally coincides with the tenure of George Suart as VP Administration (1970-1986). Activities and topics include budget planning, policy development, program development, registration, IT systems planning, and space allocation planning. Vice-President, Academic - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the activities of the Office of the Vice-President, Academic, including budget planning, involvement in teaching and faculty staff matters, meetings with other senior university administrators, and supervision of university departments that reported to the VP Academic, either directly or indirectly through the Associate VP Academic. Series consists of records relating to the university's interactions with the provincial and federal governments. Records consist predominantly of correspondence, including much that originated with other offices and was copied to the Vice-President, Academic. International educational agreements with SFU

Series consists of records relating to the university's agreements with international educational bodies and universities. Activities and topics documented include a proposal (never actualized) to establish an SFU branch campus in Japan (1992); a summer school program in Cuba in collaboration with the University of Havana; academic exchange programs with the Institute universitarie professionalisé (France), the Kyushu Institute of Technology and other institutions in Japan, the University of Dundee (Scotland), and several universities in Chile; the activities of the SFU China Steering Committee and a campaign to establish a major degree program at SFU in Chinese studies (1992). Records include correspondence, proposals, agreements, itineraries, and a student petition relating to Chinese Studies at SFU.
