Duke, Daryl

David and Mary Macaree fonds

After immigrating to Canada following World War II, David Macaree (d. 1998) earned his M.A from UBC and PhD from the University of Washington. He joined the Department of English at UBC, his primary areas of interest being 18th-century literature (mostly Defoe) and English composition, and remained a faculty member until his retirement in 1985.

Mary Macaree (1922-2008) qualified as a teacher in Scotland and then as a librarian upon immigrating to Canada. She received her Bachelor of Library Science degree from UBC in 1963 and became that institution’s head librarian in 1968. She retired in 1985.

One of Mary’s hobbies included Scottish country dancing and she also took a philanthropic interest in the development of libraries and programs supporting Scottish culture and studies. She and her husband were avid hikers and proponents of the outdoors, together they authored two popular books “103 Hikes in Southwestern British Columbia” and “109 Walks in British Columbia's Lower Mainland”.

David passed away in 1998, and Mary in 2008.

The fonds is arranged into two sous-fonds, one for each creator. The David Macaree sous-fonds is arranged into the following three series: Papers authored (1951-1986), Papers authored by others (1963-1998), and Robbie Burns research and associated notes (1961-1996). The Mary Macaree sous-fonds is also arranged into three series: Papers authored (1959-1964), Records associated with Scottish country dancing (1961-2000), and Records associated with universities and other entities (2005-2007).

Edward McWhinney was an international authority on constitutional and aviation law, a prolific author, member of multiple academic and professional organizations, a Member of the Canadian Parliament and a lecturer at universities around the world. In his later years he actively supported numerous institutions, including the charitable foundation he established with his wife, Emily McWhinney. He routinely travelled, and this collection reflects the diverse range of his careers and interests.

Consisting primarily of records created in the course of his extensive professional and political careers, this collection contains correspondence, newspaper and magazine articles, handwritten notes and cards, photographs, published materials, books, photocopies, and ephemera. The fonds has been split into 4 series: Politics and law (1943-2015); Publications and reviews (1956-2015); Associations, conferences and academia (1940-2015); Personal (1914-2015).

The collection consists of correspondence written by Ezra Pound while in St. Elizabeth's Hospital to Denis Goacher, a British writer, concerning publishing projects and publicity schemes to secure Pound's release (1952-1957), to Pound's long-time friends Wyndham Lewis and Agnes Bedford (1946-1959), and to Willis Hawley, a sinologist, concerning linguistic and technical details involved with the publication of "Confucius: The Great Digest and Unwobbling Pivot" (1951). Some of the correspondence to Hawley was written by Dorothy Pound and James Laughlin.

Records consist of material gathered and created by Rose Marie Trembley at and in the lead-up to Vancouver's Writing in Our Time reading series. Records include newsletters, posters, brochures, minutes, press releases, correspondence, and several photographs of readers and events taken by Rose Marie Tremblay. Writing in Our Time was a reading series organized by the Vancouver Poetry Centre in 1979 to benefit West Coast literary presses, especially Blew Ointment Press. Poets who read at the event include George Bowering, Fred Wah, Frank Davey, Daphne Marlatt, Victor Coleman, Gerry Gilbert, bill bissett, Robert Creeley, Ed Dorn, Ann Waldman, and Michael McClure.
