University matters - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the President, other SFU Vice-Presidents, and the administrative departments that reported to them, as well as correspondence relating to university-wide matters in general. Activities and topics documented include liaison with the federal and provincial governments, budget planning, tuition fees, university reorganization, legal advice, liaison with other senior administrators and other university administrative departments, and relations with non-faculty union and employee associations. University Services / Student Services - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the senior administrator responsible for student services and with university administrative departments during periods in which they reported to that position. Responsibility for student services was reorganized several times over the period covered by this series, and the records include correspondence with the Dean of Student Affairs (1969-1971), the Vice-President, University Services (1971-1977), and the Director of Student Services (1977-1980). Activities and topics documented include the administrative organization of the portfolio; budget planning; liaison with the Simon Fraser Student Society; and development of student services programs including financial aid, scholarships, day care, residence and housing, health services, and employment and career services. Financial matters - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the university's finances and budget. Activities and topics documented include budget planning and allocation of operating budgets, capital budgets and contingency funds to university faculties and departments; development of fees policy; and financial planning for new academic programs. Teaching and instructional staff matters - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to matters affecting teaching and faculty staff, including librarians and lab instructors. Activities and topics documented include development of the university's academic policies and procedures; faculty appointments, salaries and economic benefits; renewal, tenure and promotion; leave, retirement and immigration; and negotiations and consultations with the Simon Fraser University Faculty Association (SFUFA) and the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU). Faculties - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the university faculty Deans and academic departments. Activities and topics documented include development, implementation and interpretation of academic policies; appointments, sabbaticals, leaves, salaries, renewal, tenure and promotion; disputes, grievances, and investigations; external reviews, internal administration, and reorganizations of faculties and departments; academic planning and program proposals; budget, funding, space planning, special equipment and facilities needs; and the activities of affiliated research centres and scholarly journals. Records include correspondence, reports, external reviews, curriculum and program proposals, budget proposals and estimates, meeting agendas and minutes, agreements, legal advice, planning documents, and research centre constitutions, financial statements and annual reports.

Associations, memberships, societies and councils - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with associations and societies, including the Simon Fraser University Faculty Association (SFUFA), the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT), and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). Committee records and correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's committee work, including participation or correspondence with Senate committees, Board of Governors committees, other standing and ad hoc university committees and task forces, search committees for senior university administrators, and external (non-SFU) committees. Records include correspondence, reports, and policies and procedures; meeting agendas, minutes, and supporting papers; terms of reference, and memberships lists; policies and procedures; and some case files.

Administrative departments - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the Vice-President, Administration and with university administrative departments during periods in which they reported to the VP Administration, including the Registrar's Office, the Bursar's Office, Personnel, the Computing Centre, Physical Plant and Planning, Ancillary Services, and Athletics and Recreational Services. The series generally coincides with the tenure of George Suart as VP Administration (1970-1986). Activities and topics include budget planning, policy development, program development, registration, IT systems planning, and space allocation planning. Series consists of subject files created by the Office of the Vice-President, Academic relating to a variety of topics, including university administration, policies and procedures, the work of various university committees and task forces, and liaison with faculty, students, government, and external organizations. Vice-President, Academic - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the activities of the Office of the Vice-President, Academic, including budget planning, involvement in teaching and faculty staff matters, meetings with other senior university administrators, and supervision of university departments that reported to the VP Academic, either directly or indirectly through the Associate VP Academic. Government relations - correspondence

Series consists of records relating to the university's interactions with the provincial and federal governments. Records consist predominantly of correspondence, including much that originated with other offices and was copied to the Vice-President, Academic. International educational agreements with SFU

Series consists of records relating to the university's agreements with international educational bodies and universities. Activities and topics documented include a proposal (never actualized) to establish an SFU branch campus in Japan (1992); a summer school program in Cuba in collaboration with the University of Havana; academic exchange programs with the Institute universitarie professionalisé (France), the Kyushu Institute of Technology and other institutions in Japan, the University of Dundee (Scotland), and several universities in Chile; the activities of the SFU China Steering Committee and a campaign to establish a major degree program at SFU in Chinese studies (1992). Records include correspondence, proposals, agreements, itineraries, and a student petition relating to Chinese Studies at SFU.
