Adbusters Media Foundation fonds

Fonds consists of records created or received by Adbusters Media Foundation through the organization's publishings, advocacy campaigns, legal action, and merchandising. The fonds is a hybrid, containing born-digital materials as well as paper and analogue textual records, graphic materials, audiovisual materials, and artifacts. Records include magazines, books, posters, pamphlets, digital newsletters, digital spoof advertisements, graphic designs, mockups, memes, promotional photographs, marketing plans, operational notes and manuals, financial statements, correspondence, legal records, talking notes, and website captures. Records also include interview transcriptions and copies of newspaper and magazine articles documenting the organization's achievements. Graphic, textile, and ceramic merchandise also make up a notable portion of the fonds.

The fonds has been arranged by the archivist into twelve series:

Adbusters Media Foundation

Publications and associated records

Series consists of Adbusters Media Foundation publications and books authored by Kalle Lasn, as well as drafts and mockups associated with the creation of these publications. Records include copies of Adbusters magazine and its mockups, Big Noise magazine, Culture Jam, Design Anarchy, Meme Wars, the Adbusters Media Literacy Kit, calendars, pamphlets, posters, digital spoof ads, and digital listserv newsletters.

The series has been arranged by the archivist into ten sub-series based on the publication type:

Big Noise magazine records (sub-series 2).
Magazine mockups and revisions (sub-series 3).
Books and associated records (sub-series 4).
Media literacy kits and associated records (sub-series 5).
Calendars and associated records (sub-series 6).

Digital spoof ads and associated records (sub-series 9).
Listserv newsletter (sub-series 10).

Files are arranged chronologically.

Adbusters magazine

Sub-series contains physical copies of 162 issues of Adbusters magazine, from inception up to August 2022. Two copies of Adbusters magazine, vol. 16, no. 3 (issue 77) with alternative cover pages are included. The sub-series also includes a separated cover which was once used to bind the "Blueprint for a New World" boxset (issues 112-117).

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence sent and received by Mootoo. Records include cards and letters sent by friends and admirers, printed emails exchanged between Mootoo and her agent and publishers, and other professional and personal correspondence.

Cane|Fire

Series consists of drafts for Cane|Fire, a book of poetry by Mootoo.

Posters and associated records

Sub-series consists of physical and born-digital posters created and distributed by Adbusters Media Foundation. Born-digital records also include graphic design mockups and drafts associated with the creation of posters. While there is some overlap, print posters and born-digital records in this sub-series do not necessarily correlate.

Digital spoof ads and associated records

Sub-series consists of born-digital Adbusters' spoof advertisement graphic files and associated records. Records include digital spoof ads parodying Absolute Vodka, Altria, Benetton, Calvin Klein, Coca-Cola, Disney, Eli Lilly, Esso, Gap, George Bush, Joe Camel, Marlboro, McDonalds, Nike, Phillip Morris, the automotive industry, the beauty industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and the American flag. Associated records include spoof ad contest submissions, licensed image usage contracts, and licensed reprint request tracking tables.

Books

Series consists of books written or published by Gambone. Sub-series 1 represents output from Gambone's own publishing house, the Red Lion Press; sub-series 2 comprises books written or edited by Gambone issued by other publishers.

Publications by other publishers

Sub-series consists of books by Gambone published by publishers other than Red Lion Press. Titles includes a 2010 edition of Joseph Dietzgen's The Nature of Human Brain Work with an essat by Gambone (PM Press); and two works published by Edmonton's Black Cat Press, Gambone's memoir, No Regrets (2015), and his history of the BC IWW, For Freedom We Will Fight (2021).

Larry Gambone fonds

Fonds consists of records relating to Larry Gambone's activities as a student activist at SFU from 1967-1970 and his subsequent participation in Vancouver and BC counter-culture and anarchist movements. Records include Gambone's correspondence, notebooks and published writings; materials relating to various BC branches of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) in which Gambone participated; his collection of anarchist and radical political literature (periodicals, pamphlets, posters); and copies of works issued by his publishing house, the Red Lion Press.
