President's Office - general

Sub-sub-series consists of records relating to the VP Academic's interaction with the President's Office. Activities and topics documented include the Vice-President's reporting relationship to the President (meetings, advice, reports); inter-university cooperation, government liaison and international activities involving both Offices; university ceremonies and fundraising; the President's investigations of complaints; policy development, including the creation of a harassment policy; government funding, the budget crisis of 1985 and the reorganization of the faculties with the dissolution of the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies. Records include correspondence, minutes, legal advice, press releases, and university planning documents and mission statements.

External Relations

Sub-sub-series consists of the VP Academic's correspondence with, related to, or copied from bodies responsible for the university's international programs, including the President's Advisory Committee on International Cooperation (of which the VP Academic was chair, 1986-1991), International Cooperation (1992-1995), and the External Relations Office (1997- ). Topics include organization of the university's international services and programs, hosting of international delegations and visitors, liaison with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the activities of SFU's Eastern Indonesia Universities Development Project (EIUDP), and correspondence with PhileoAllied Berhad, a Malaysian consulting, banking and real estate company. Employment Equity

Sub-sub-series consists of records relating to the planning and implementation of the university's Employment Equity policies and programs, deliberations and activities of the Employment Equity Advisory Committee, and formation of faculty Equity Committees. Records include correspondence, meeting minutes, statistics and reports, equity plans of university department, and copies of Compliance Review Reports.

President's Advisory Committee on Priorities and Budgeting (PACOPAB)

Sub-sub-series consists of records relating to the activities and deliberations of the President's Advisory Committee on Priorities and Budgeting, a committee established to deal with the university's budget crisis in 1993. Records include correspondence, reports, meeting agendas, minutes and supporting papers, budget modelling exercises, budget proposals, requests, estimates and recommendations.

President's Committee on University Planning (PCUP)

Sub-sub-series consists of records relating to the President's Committee on University Planning. The material was forwarded to the VP Academic with responsibility for establishing a consultation process to begin implementing / prioritizing the Committee's recommendations. Records include correspondence, meeting minutes and supporting papers, drafts, reports, and working paper.

Analytical Studies

Sub-series consists of the Vice-President's correspondence with, related to, or copied from Analytical Studies. Activities documented included provision and analysis of statistical data supporting enrolment, academic and space planning. Records include correspondence, reports and statistics.

Media and Public Relations

Sub-sub-series consists of the Vice-President, Academic's correspondence with, related to, or copied from Media and Public Relations (called University News Services prior to 1988) during periods when this office either reported to the President or to a Vice-President that had no filing category in the file classification plan. Topics include search for a Director (1982), development of departmental programs and projects (Speakers' Bureau, SFU Ideas, research directory), and tracking SFU's media coverage. Records include correspondence, opinion polls, press releases, brochures, and news clipping reports.

Executive Council

Sub-series consists of records relating to the activities and deliberations of the Executive Council, a body of senior administrators at the university, including the President, Vice-Presidents, and Deans. Records include meeting agendas, minutes, supporting papers, and correspondence.

Development Office

Sub-series consists of the Vice-President's correspondence with, related to, or copied from the Development Office (called Resources Office prior to 1982). Activities and topics documented include fund-raising, donations to the university, and alumni relations. Records consist predominantly of correspondence.

Archives

Sub-sub-series consists of the VP Academic's correspondence with, related to, or copied from the University Archivist. Topics include development of the university's Archives policy, and agreement with the Simon Fraser University Faculty Association relating to the faculty status of the University Archivist. Records consists predominantly of correspondence.

Student Services

Sub-sub-series consists of the VP Academic's correspondence with, related to, or copied from the Director of Student Services and the units that reported to it. Topics include financial aid, student employment, health services, daycare, residences, scholarships, disabled students, and the reorganization of Student Services in 1985. Records include correspondence, reports, and organization charts.

Vice-President, Financial Services - general

Sub-sub-series consists of the Vice-President Academic's correspondence with, related to, or copied from the Vice-President Financial Services (called Vice-President, Finance from 1985-1988), and some departments in that VP's reporting portfolio (Facilities Management and Security). Topics include payroll, accounting, capital planning, budget policies and procedures, tuition fee policy, development of the administration information system for payroll and personnel, the report of the President's Advisory Committee on Finance (1985), and a report on The Finance Function at SFU prepared by the Woods Gordon firm. Records include correspondence, reports, budget applications, capital plans, and financial statements.

Human Resources - general

Sub-sub-series consists of the Vice-President Academic's correspondence with, related to, or copied from the Director of Human Resources. Topics include training, pensions, benefits, staff study leave, the university's strike plan (1994), and the activities of the Joint Job Evaluation and Salary Review Committee (a joint APSA / SFU committee, 1996-1997). Records include correspondence, reports, and questionnaires.

Human Resources - Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU)

Sub-sub-series consists of records relating to joint meetings, consultations, and negotiations between the university and the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU). Records include correspondence, meeting agendas, minutes and supporting papers, a copy of the TSSU memorandum of settlement (1995), and TSSU bargaining bulletins (1999).

Vice-President, Research - general

Sub-sub-series consists of correspondence of the Vice-President, Academic with, related to, or copied from the Vice-President Research. Topics include research policy development, research grants and professorships, development of the student information system (SIMON), supervision of research centres and institutes, and the deliberations and activities of a number of university committees including the SFU / Canada Foundation for Innovation Steering Committee, the University Publications Committee, the President's Research Grant Committee, and the University Radiology Safety Committee. Records include correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, communiqués and press releases, annual reports of research centres, and research grant proposals, summaries, and awards lists.

Research centres, groups and institutes

Sub-sub-series consists of records relating to the establishment and activities of research centres and institutes, including proposals for centres that were not successful. Records include correspondence, brochures, meeting minutes, reports (including annual reports), proposals and applications, agreements, and budgets.

University Computing Advisory Committee

Sub-sub-series consists of records relating to the deliberations and activities of the University Computing Advisory Committee (UCAC). UCAC reported to the VP Research. The VP Academic was a member of the committee, and the records in this sub-sub-series represent VP Academic's working files and copies of UCAC records.

Archives

Sub-sub-series consists of the Vice-President, Academic's correspondence with, related to, or copied from the University Archivist during the period when the University Archives reported to the Vice-President, Research. Topics documented include the establishment of the university's Archives Policy, the development of the records management program, and a report on access and privacy issues as they related to archival holdings. Records include correspondence, draft policies and working papers, reports, and records management advisory notes.

Computing Services

Sub-sub-series consists of the Vice-President, Academic's correspondence with, related to, or copied from the Director of the Computing Services during the period when the Computing Services (prior to 1985 named Computing Centre) reported to the Vice-President, Research. Activities and topics documented include policy development, network planning, equipment and budget allocation, the microcomputer subsidy program, and the activities of the Large Scale Computing Review Committee (1987) and the Task Force on Distributed Computing (1991). Records consist predominantly of correspondence, with some reports.
