Newspaper clippings and media coverage

Series consists of newspaper clippings, articles from magazines, print-outs of online articles, flyers for the Burnaby Correctional Institute for Women Library, pamphlets, newsletters, associated correspondence, and press releases related to Betty Krawczyk’s environmental activities, prison sentence, and court case. Reviews of Betty’s published works are included in the series. Series also contains print copies of Betty’s blog posts. There is coverage of various community activism groups, including aboriginal issues in British Columbia. Some of the records are photocopies and photographs.

Fonds consists of the personal records of Betty Krawczyk, an environmentalist and active community member in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. Spanning from 1970 to 2013, the fonds documents Krawczyk’s court cases, time spent in prison and participation in local community activism groups. The fonds predominately contains correspondence and legal records associated with Krawczyk’s court cases and prison sentences. Other records include certificates, notes, flyers, flags, mission statements, newspaper clippings, envelopes, financial papers, and Krawczyk’s published materials. Legal records and related materials

Series consists of legal reports, court statements, affidavits, legal notices, court speeches, financial papers, request forms, behavioral reports, and government correspondence with Betty Krawczyk. Series also contains research Krawczyk performed while preparing for her court cases. There are numerous copies of diverse legal acts and other court case examples from throughout North America.

[Incoming correspondence]

File consists of letters of correspondence addressed to Betty Krawczyk. Correspondence is in relation to Krawczyk’s purchase of property, submission to a Lesbian Writers Fund, the publication of “The Clayquot: The Sound of my Heart,” and political affiliations. The file also contains two postcards, an envelope, and three photographs.

Personal correspondence and related materials

Series consists of letters of correspondence, postcards, greeting cards, photographs, mailing address lists, prison correspondence lists, faxes, photocopies of letters, printed e-mails, excerpts from a magazine, newspaper clippings, a receipt, two calendars, earning reports, newsletters, a real estate advertisement, and drawings from Betty Krawczyk time in prison. Local, national, and international incoming and outgoing correspondence is included in this series. Some of the correspondence and its accompanying materials were received from Krawczyk’s family members and friends, while others are from strangers who read about her experiences in newspapers throughout the world. Some correspondence also includes proof samples of Krawczyk’s publications.

File consists of print-outs of online articles regarding environmental court cases. One article is titled “Supreme Court of Canada – Decisions – R. v. Smith (Edward Dewey),” while the other is “State v. Verdream, 2003 – Ohio – 7284.”

File consists of records related to Betty Krawczyk’s finances. File includes a report titled “Workers’ Compensation Review Board Findings,” a money order slip paid to the YWCA, a prison pay record, and an invoice from the BCCW Tailor Shop.

The file includes a handwritten letter asking for support from Betty Krawczyk, court documents and newspaper clippings regarding the MacMillan Bloedel v. Simpson et al. case, a photocopy of a journal article titled “When the Public Interest Loses: The Liability of Public Interest Litigants for Adverse Costs Awards” by Chris Tollefson, and print-outs from three pages of the “Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation” Government of British Columbia website.

File consists of reports related to other environmental court cases. File contains Quicklaw report titled “MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. v. Simpson,” excerpts from The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and Quicklaw report titled “R. v. Lewis”.

Clayoquot Sound 1993

File consists of newspaper clippings related to protests at Clayoquot Sound, the resulting arrests, and associated court cases. Clippings are from "Times Colonist," "The Westerly News," "Nanaimo Daily Free Press," and "The Province." There is also a news release and newsletters from The Friends of the Clayoquot Sound.

Community activism records

The series documents the activities of community activism groups associated with Betty Krawczyk. Series consists of mission statements, flyers, a paper flag, song lyrics, correspondence, pamphlets, booklets, newspaper clippings, journals, three calendars, speeches, handwritten notes, a membership list, and envelopes for Women in the Woods, the Canadian Party of Women, and other community activism groups Krawczyk was involved with during the mid-1990s to 2007. Series also contains textile records, including a Prison Justice Day t-shirt, flags, hats, a tote bag, and an aboriginal bead blanket. A large portion of the series relates to the activities of Women in the Woods and Betty’s political movements.

[Court reports]

File consists of court documents regarding three Supreme Court of British Columbia court cases – Her Majesty the Queen against Samuel Kelly, Jody Sim, Andrea Schaal, and Kevin Kunzler; MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. v. Simpson; and Regina v. Betty Krawczyk. The file contains a report titled “Oral Reasons for Sentencing,” two Quicklaw reports, e-mail print-outs, and a report titled “Reasons for Judgment” for Krawczyk’s case. The file also includes a print-out of a Wikipedia article on polygamy.

File includes a print-out of an online article titled “Polluting Our Principles: Environmental Prosecutions and the Bill of Rights” by Timothy Lynch, and two copies of a court document titled “Betty Krawczyk’s Outline of Argument” for the Supreme Court of British Columbia case between Peter Kiewit Sons Co. and Dennis Perry, Bruce McArthur, John Doe, and Jane Doe.
