Personal records

Series consists of personal records from Bringhurst and his immediate family. Personal records from his parents include letters between the two, as well as official records such as birth, death, and marriage certificates. Materials arising from Bringhurst's personal activities include passports and numerous daybooks, dating from 2000-2013.

Fonds consists of correspondence, manuscripts, notes, articles, and promotional materials created or accumulated by Robert Bringhurst over the course of his career as a typographer and writer. The majority of records were created in 2000 or later, as the donor had also donated records to Library and Archives Canada in the past.

The records include manuscripts of several of his major publications, as well as draft versions and speaking notes for many essays written and talks delivered throughout his career. Also included is correspondence with friends, publishers, and colleagues, translated editions of many of his books, and promotional materials such as posters and brochures for many conferences, festivals, and other events Bringhurst participated in. The fonds also contains some personal records, including birth, marriage, and death certificates from his immediate family. A timeline of major life events and activities has been included by the donor.

Reid-writings

This file consists of various pieces of writings and transcriptions of talks by Bill Reid, many of which are reproductions.

Chronological files

Series consists of records created or accumulated by Bringhurst's various professional activities. Such activities include writing, editorial work, his role as judge for various literary and typographic prizes, and speaking engagements at numerous conferences, festivals, and other events around the world. Records include drafts of talks and written works such as essays and books, notes and research related to talks and writings, page proofs, correspondence with event organizers, travel tickets and itineraries, and newspaper articles, brochures, conferences programs and other ephemera documenting events he participated in.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence to and from Bringhurst, arising from personal and professional activities. Sub-series include correspondence with publishers; general outbound correspondence; general inbound correspondence; and inbound correspondence sorted by name.

Publisher correspondence

File consists of correspondence, royalty statements, publication catalogues, and promotional materials related to various publishers Bringhurst has worked with.

Offprints & stray publications 1973-1998

File consists of the following publications: a book review of "Haida Art" by George F. MacDonald; "In Praise of Gorgias"; "Pebble/Pond/Errata Slip: A Codicil to Ocean/Paper/Stone"; "Postscript to a Translation of Empedocles"; "Eight Poems and Translations"; "Fast Drumming Ground"; "Some Notes on Verse and Versification" (draft).

Advertising 1975-2000

File consists of 2 copies of Bringhurst's curriculum vitae, promotional material for the works "The Calling, Selected Poems 1970-1995," "Pieces of Map, Pieces of Music," and "Bergschrund," an advertisement for a seminar series entitled, "The Book and its Form: An Historical Anatomy of Literature Culture," and a document entitled "Comments on previous books by Robert Bringhurst."

Banff workshop

File consists of a work entitled, "What Kinds of Verse are There?". The title page reads, "Reproduced for private circulation to members of the Advanced Writing Program, The Banff Centre, November 1983. This is a working draft, not for further reproduction."

The book and its form

File consists of a course packet issued to each student in a course Bringhurst taught at Simon Fraser University in 1984, entitled "The Book and its Form: An Historical Anatomy of Literate Culture."

Naming the stars book proposal 1/3 1983-1984

File consists of the proposal for the book "Naming the Stars: The Mythology of the Visible Heavens," including an editorial summary, table of contents, excerpts from the manuscript, and samples of illustrations.

Art and money Fredericton lecture

File consists of research materials, notes, and drafts for a the talk "Art and Money," a 1998 issue of the publication "Fraser Forum," correspondence from the Canada Council from the Arts and from Penny Dickens, and a reproduction of a document entitled, "The Report of the Task Force on Funding of the Arts June 1986." Some materials are related to Bringhurt's term as chair of the Writers' Union's Committee on the Social Responsibility of the Artist.

Himalayas

File contains business cards and ephemera from a trip to Nepal, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Scollon-essays

File consists of several essays and talks by and about Ron Scollon, many of which are reproductions, as well as Scollon's resume.
