Adbusters magazine

Sub-series contains physical copies of 162 issues of Adbusters magazine, from inception up to August 2022. Two copies of Adbusters magazine, vol. 16, no. 3 (issue 77) with alternative cover pages are included. The sub-series also includes a separated cover which was once used to bind the "Blueprint for a New World" boxset (issues 112-117).

Administrative records

Sub-series consists of paper and born-digital records created by Adbusters Media Foundation while administering the Blackspot campaign. Paper records include income statements, correspondence (manufacturer, retailer, and customer), stock inventories, marketing plans, market analyses, newsletters, and an internal order processing manual. Born-digital records include John Fluevog design drawings, letterheads, and internal manuals on the pricing, order processing, shipment, and exchange of Blackspot shoes.

Analogue publications

This sub-series contains analogue sound recordings and audiovisual materials. Records include a VHS titled New Ideas for Television: Ads to Make You Think (1991), a mixed CD titled Adbusters Live Without Dead Time (2003, mixed by DJ Spooky that subliminal kid), and a DVD titled The Production of Meaning (2006).

Big Noise magazine

Sub-series consists of the first two issues of Big Noise magazine, a periodical published by Adbusters Media Foundation with teenagers as the intended audience. Also included is a Big Noise media literacy supplement for teachers.

Books and associated records

Sub-series consists of physical books authored by Kalle Lasn and their associated born-digital records. Physical books are available in English, as well as in the languages listed in the "Language of material" note. These books include Culture Jam: How to Reverse America's Suicidal Consumer Binge - and Why We Must (2000), Design Anarchy (2006), and Meme Wars: The Creative Destruction Of Neoclassical Economics (2012).

Born-digital records include release statements, advertisement graphics, book reviews, thank-you letters, contributor tracking tables, artist permissions tracking tables, licensed image usage contracts, royalty reports, spoof warning labels, and English-language digital copies of each of the three books.

Born-digital records

This sub-series contains born-digital sound recordings, audiovisual materials, and graphic artwork. Records include short (15 second to 1 minute in length) promotional videos for Adbusters Magazine and the organization's various campaigns; audio readings of Adbusters Magazine (Issues 71 to 98), and an audio recording interview with activist Kenneth O'Keefe. Born-digital graphic materials associated with Adbusters Live Without Dead Time (2003, mixed by DJ Spooky that subliminal kid), and The Production of Meaning (2006) are also included within this sub-series.

Born-digital records

Sub-series consists of born-digital records related to the creation of Adbusters-branded merchandise. Records include photographs and digital graphic mockups of stickers, postcards, T-shirts, coffee mugs, baseball cards, flags, packaging, buttons, patches, and a spoof parking ticket.

While there is some overlap, physical merchandise from sub-series F-300-6-1 and born-digital records in this sub-series do not necessarily correlate.

Buy Nothing Day campaign records

Sub-series consists of records created by Adbusters Media Foundation for the Buy Nothing Day advocacy campaign. Buy Nothing Day is an international day of protest against consumerism, coined by artist Ted Dave and promoted by Adbusters. Buy Nothing Day originally took place in September. It was later adjusted to and popularized as taking place on Black Friday, the fourth Friday of November. Buy Nothing Day has been since expanded to Buy Nothing Christmas in order to advocate for buying locally or crafting your own gifts during the holiday season.

Born-digital records include digital graphics, photographs, memes, press releases, moving image "subvertisements," and an audio file of Silent Night recorded in a mall. Paper records include "Buy Nothing Christmas" cards.

Calendars and associated records

Sub-series consists of print and born-digital calendars produced by Adbusters Media Foundation and their associated records. Print materials include 19 Adbusters calendars, dated to 1994, 1997, 1999-2008, 2012, and 2015-2020.

Born-digital materials include digital copies of calendars, mockups, advertisement graphics, artist permissions tracking tables, printing invoices, lists of famous quotes to include, lists of important dates to mark off, and thank-you notes. These born-digital records are associated with the calendars published from 2001-2003, 2005-2014, and 2018-2020. While there is some overlap, print calendars and born-digital records in this sub-series do not necessarily correlate.

Culture Shop administrative records

Sub-series contains records related to the administration of the Adbusters Media Foundation Culture Shop, with specific reference to multiple user surveys conducted to determine user engagement with the website. Physical and born-digital records include manuals, user surveys, and survey findings.

Digital spoof ads and associated records

Sub-series consists of born-digital Adbusters' spoof advertisement graphic files and associated records. Records include digital spoof ads parodying Absolute Vodka, Altria, Benetton, Calvin Klein, Coca-Cola, Disney, Eli Lilly, Esso, Gap, George Bush, Joe Camel, Marlboro, McDonalds, Nike, Phillip Morris, the automotive industry, the beauty industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and the American flag. Associated records include spoof ad contest submissions, licensed image usage contracts, and licensed reprint request tracking tables.

Eu Zên: Seoul Mediacity Biennale Exhibition records

Sub-series contains records related to Adbusters Media Foundation's participation in the 2018 Seoul Mediacity Biennale Exhibition. Paper records include an exhibition catalogue, where Adbusters Media Foundation is featured on page 195. Born-digital records include a press release, emails, photographs, and a video of Adbusters' exhibit.

Financial records

Sub-series contains financial records of Adbusters Media Foundation. These records include annual reports, budgets, income statements, financial summaries, balance sheets, payment schedules, tax forms, monthly sales reports, sales analytics, and invoices. Records largely pertain to the operational costs of Adbusters Media Foundation in general, but include some specific financial records associated with the Blackspot campaign.

First Things First project records

Sub-series consists of records created by Adbusters Media Foundation during the First Things First project advocacy campaign. Building on the 1964 manifesto of British designer Ken Garland, the First Things First project was re-launched by Adbusters in 1999 to advocate against the use of graphic design to promote unethical products and industries.

In 2008, Adbusters launched the One World, One Flag design competition as a sub-campaign within the First Things First movement. In this sub-campaign, Adbusters called on designers from around the world to submit a flag design that embodies the ideal of global citizenship. In 2018, Adbusters brought the First Things first campaign to Emily Carr University, through an event called the "Emily Carr Jam."

Paper records include posters, design concepts, sketches, collages, internal memos, and campaign strategies and plans. Born-digital records include digital graphics, press releases, emails, "One World, One Flag" design submissions, and digital photographs.

General administrative records

Sub-series contains general records related to the administration of Adbusters Media Foundation. Paper records include business cards and envelopes. Born-digital records include scanned incorporation documents, Adbusters logos, Kalle Lasn's author photos and biographical summary, "About Adbusters" blurbs, business cards, letterheads, fax covers, envelop artwork, operation manuals, phone line extension lists, job postings, reference letters, staff schedules, internal media inquiry checklists, election forms, and scanned group photographs of staff from the 1990s.

General campaign records

Sub-series consists of born-digital records created by Adbusters Media Foundation during the following campaigns: Media Carta, TV Turnoff Week, Mindbombs, Boycott Divest sanctions, Black Remembrance Day, and the White House Siege. Records related to the development of a World Revolution App are also included. Types of born-digital records include manifestos, posters, advertisements, memes, photographs of merchandise, internal fundraising textual records, emails, and a moving image depicting an app's conceptual design (in .MOV format).

Grant applications and associated records

Sub-series contains applications and deliverables related to the TIDES Foundation grant and the Curry Stone Foundation Design Prize. Records include grant applications, grant progress reports, graphic design submissions lists, permission forms, and spoof ad graphics.

Kick It Over campaign records

Sub-series consists of born-digital records created by Adbusters Media Foundation during the Kick It Over advocacy campaign. Kick It Over was launched to mobilize students to work for a curriculum change in the field of Economics. The campaign argues for "kicking over" neoclassical economic theory and the measurement of gross domestic product, as it creates and illusion of progress that does not account for the true cost of an industry's negative effects on the environment or public health. In 2012, Adbusters brought the Kick It Over campaign to University of British Columbia, through an event called the "UBC Jam" or "Occupy Econ 101."

Born-digital records include the kick it over manifesto, posters, digital graphics, and photographs taken during the UBC Jam.

Listserv newsletter

Sub-series contains born-digital copies of the listserv newsletter distributed by Adbusters Media Foundation. The newsletter discusses ongoing campaigns being promoted by Adbusters Media Foundation; Adbusters magazine launches and subscription sales; and sales on merchandise or Blackspot shoes.

Records include the newsletter textual records (in HTML and PDF format) as well as separate digital graphics files associated with the newsletters (in PDF, JPG, JPEG, TIF, TIFF, PNG, GIF, and PSD format).

Media literacy kits and associated records

Sub-series contains paper and born-digital records related to the Adbusters Media Literacy Kit, Media Empowerment Kit, and the implementation of media literacy workshops. Paper records include the Adbusters Media Lit Kit (2010), as well as two photocopies of a media literacy workshop supplement. Born-digital records include advertisement graphics, flyers, workshop powerpoint presentation templates (in PDF format), workshop notes, media lit kit assembly how-to guides, correspondence, contact lists, draft email templates, order forms, page revisions, Adbusters spoof ads, and a digital copy of a Media Empowerment DVD featuring Adbusters' TV spots.

Born-digital copies of the Adbusters Media Literacy Kit (2006), Adbusters Media Empowerment Kit (2007), Adbusters Media Lit Kit (2010), and the Adbusters Media Empowerment Kit (2012) are also included.

Occupy Silicon Valley campaign records

Sub-series consists of born-digital records created by Adbusters Media Foundation during the Occupy Silicon Valley campaign. Occupy Silicon Valley was initiated by Adbusters in September 2018 to protest the influence of tech companies such as Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Apple, and Facebook.

Born-digital records include press releases, posters, stickers, memes, instagram story graphics, and moving image files (MP4, MPEG) used to promote the campaign.

Occupy Wall Street campaign records

Sub-series consists of born-digital records created by Adbusters Media Foundation during the Occupy Wall Street campaign. Occupy Wall Street was a campaign initiated by Adbusters in September 2011 to protest wealth disparity and corporate influence on democracy in the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis. Adbusters initially called for protestors to occupy Zuccotti Park in New York City, but the movement eventually grew to be run by local grassroots collectives over 900 cities around the world.

Born-digital records in this sub-series include posters, pamphlets, protest photographs, and memes.

Operational notes

Sub-series contains both paper and digital notes created by Adbusters staff members when conducting general operations for the foundation. Paper records include 13 staff notebooks, which detail marketing strategies, design sketches, campaign concepts, draft newsletters, and general notes taken by a minimum of four different individuals employed by Adbusters Media Foundation.

Digital records include volunteer schedules, job descriptions, task lists, to-do lists, external contact lists, meeting notes, a proposed booklet outline, how-to guides, branding plans, digital migration plans, and general notes created by multiple individuals employed by Adbusters Media Foundation.

Pamphlets

Sub-series consists of three pamphlet series distributed by Adbusters Media Foundation. These include the "PoWeRShift Media Campaigns" pamphlet (a subsidiary of Adbusters which created advocacy commercials in the 1990s), the "Cyborg Manifesto," and a 5-part advocacy pamphlet series titled "Field Guide to a New World Order."

A born-digital version of each "Field Guide to a New World Order" is included as an access copy of these pamphlets. Access copies of the "PoWeRShift Media Campaigns" and the "Cyborg Manifesto" pamphlets are created from digital scans provided by Adbusters.

Physical merchandise

Sub-series consists of physical merchandise produced and distributed by Adbusters Media Foundation. Records include postcards, stickers, pin-back buttons, fridge magnets, magazine subscription cards, flags, apparel, a coffee mug, a magnetized ceramic cookie, spoof parking tickets, and baseball cards.

Posters and associated records

Sub-series consists of physical and born-digital posters created and distributed by Adbusters Media Foundation. Born-digital records also include graphic design mockups and drafts associated with the creation of posters. While there is some overlap, print posters and born-digital records in this sub-series do not necessarily correlate.

Production and distribution records

Sub-series contains born-digital records associated with the production and distribution of Adbusters magazine and the Adbusters calendar. These records include lists of distributors and stockists, order tracking tables, invoices, sales forecasts, magazine exchange lists, production schedules, production cost quotes, and contacts between Adbusters and distribution services Disticor and Ebsco.

Promotional materials

Sub-series consists of analogue and born-digital records created by Adbusters Media Foundation while promoting Blackspot sneakers and boots. Paper and analogue records include pamphlets, a "Blackspot manifesto," stickers, promotional photographs, and shareholder certificates. Born-digital records include advertisement graphics, promotional photographs, posters, coupons, stickers, gift cards, labels, shareholder certificates, T-shirt mockups, catalogues, promotional comics, and website mockups.
