[Podovinnikov, Joseph E.]

This file consists of manuscript diary of Joseph E. Podovinnikov between January 2, 1958 and February 25, 1958 containing 118 completely filled pages in a printed diary with cover title, My Trip, almost entirely in Russian (some English terms used occasionally). The diary describes the day-by-day occurrences during Podovinnikov's trip from Hilliers, BC to Russia and return, including time in Moscow meeting with various leaders, as well as sightseeing, and on to Altai, Siberia, and return to Canada. At end are 22 pages of poems relating to the trip, also by Podovinnikov. Signed and with relevant information by Podovinnikov on one preliminary leaf. The events leading up to and resulting from this trip to Khruschev's Soviet Union are succinctly described in Woodcock and Avakumovic's The Doukhobors (1968) on pages 344-6. Other than a few photographs and later secondary sources, no known account of this historic visit is recorded. Interestingly, this diary was entered as evidence in R. V. Moojelsky et al at BC Provincial Court June 25, 1962, but, since Podovinnikov was never charged in relation to the trial of Sons of Freedom arsonists and others, it was returned to him. The diary is the only primary account by a Sons of Freedom representative to visit Moscow in response to Canada’s imprisonment of Doukhobor children and Doukhobor’s interest in “return” to Russia.
