Choreography records

Series consists of records relating to Iris Garland’s choreography work mainly as an independent choreographer or dancer at various concerts and festivals, but also for SFU faculty dance concerts. The series also includes materials pertaining to an original work of choreography Garland created for her final project in the Laban Movement Analysis Intensive Certification Program with the University of Washington. Records include choreography notes, photographic materials, performance programmes, clippings of articles and reviews, scripts, cue sheets, research and supporting documents, and correspondence.

Conference and professional affiliation records

Series consists of records relating to Iris Garland’s involvement in various dance conferences and symposiums hosted by SFU or external dance associations with which she had a professional affiliation. It also includes documentation on her role as coordinator for a BC Touring Council for the Performing Arts project. The series includes materials documenting the various positions she held, including panel chair, moderator, presenter, performer, and organizing committee member. Records include proceedings, papers, speaking notes, correspondence, planning notes, agendas, schedules, and registration documents.

Correspondence

Series consists of Iris Garland’s correspondence with colleagues, professional contacts, and former students. It also includes some correspondence from dance performance audience members, as well as a few personal letters interspersed with professional correspondence. Series includes incoming letters and some copies of outgoing letters reflecting Garland’s day-to-day teaching duties and employment, involvement on committees, and accolades for performances mounted by the SFU dance program and her professional employment in general. Records primarily consist of correspondence, but also include some copies of dance performance reviews.

Grant files

Series consists of records documenting Iris Garland’s successful and unsuccessful federal grant applications for research or travel, and in particular for her extensive study of Spanish dancer Tórtola Valencia. Records include completed applications, correspondence, and supporting documents.

Personal records

Series consists of Iris Garland’s personal records arising from activities that include her academic, dance, and related studies; her employment with SFU and elsewhere; her impact on the dance world; and in part her early family life. For types of records, see sub-series descriptions.

SFU dance program history and development

Series consists of records relating to Iris Garland’s active involvement in the establishment and development of SFU’s contemporary dance program, as well as her support for the creation of an academic, credited fine and performing arts program at the University. The series also includes records documenting the history of the dance program in the context of the local dance scene and other post-secondary dance programs, as well as records pertaining to the Burnaby Mountain Dance Company and the Off-Centre Dance Company, both offshoots of the SFU program. Records include reports, proposals, copies of clippings and reviews, notes, correspondence, performance programmes, and background literature.

SFU dance workshops and productions

Series consists of records relating to Iris Garland’s involvement in the planning and delivery of SFU dance workshops and lecture demonstrations, the resulting productions and performances, and their review by the media. It also includes materials pertaining to visiting artists in residence and guest performers invited by Garland to take part in or deliver various dance workshops and intensives. Records include performance programmes, photographs, media releases, handbills, copies of clippings and reviews, posters, correspondence, schedules, notes, and other materials.

Special media

Series consists of sound and moving image recordings related to various dance productions choreographed by Iris Garland both as an independent performer and as an SFU faculty member. It also includes a documentary featuring a workshop taught by Garland. For types of records, see sub-series descriptions.

Teaching records

Series consists of records documenting courses and workshops taught by Iris Garland primarily at SFU. It also includes substantial material relating to “Dancing in Cyberspace: Creating with the Virtual Body,” a telelearning course she co-developed at SFU.
