Regular faculty

Sub-series consists of records relating to matters affecting the terms and conditions of employment of regular faculty at SFU. Activities and topics documented include employment equity, including the activities of the Employment Equity Resource Group; appointments and the activities of the University Appointments Committee; pensions, benefits, housing and moving expenses; salaries, the Compensation Stabilization Program, and the activities of the Committee to Review the Full Professors Salary Scale (1980-1981), the Salary Policy Review Committee (1985), and the University Salary Appeals Committee; renewal, tenure and promotion processes, including the activities of various Departmental Tenure Committees and the University Tenure Committee (UTC); and leave, sabbaticals, retirement, and early retirement. Records include correspondence, reports and statistics; appointment requests and authorizations; meeting agenda, minutes and supporting papers; policies; legal advice; notes, working papers, and printed reference material.

Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU)

Sub-series consists of records relating to the university's consultations and negotiations with the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU). Activities and topics documented include collective bargaining negotiations, the activities of the TSSU Labour / Management Committee, interpretations of collective bargaining provisions, and union grievances. Records include correspondence, statistics and reports, Labour Relations Board (LRB) decisions, legal advice, collective bargaining proposals and agreements, meeting minutes, notes and working papers, and printed reference material.

Immigration

Sub-series consists of records relating to policy for foreign faculty recruitment and university assistance to non-Canadian faculty on matters of immigration. Records include correspondence, policies, reports, and statistics.

Policies and procedures

Sub-series consists of records relating to the development, implementation and interpretation of university policies and procedures, especially academic policies ("A" series). Policies documented include faculty responsibilities, resignations, salary, sabbatical leave, relocation expenses, dismissal for cause, financial exigency, and the operations of Images Theatre. Records include correspondence, policies, drafts and working papers, legal advice, and printed reference material.

Leave

Sub-series consists of records relating to faculty leave. Activities and topics documented include development of policy and procedures, and the activities and recommendation of the Sabbatical Leave Committee. Records include correspondence and statistics.

Renewal, tenure and promotion

Sub-series consists of records relating to faculty renewal, tenure and promotion. Activities and topics documented include development of policy and procedures, and the activities and recommendation of the various Faculty Tenure Committees. Records include correspondence, statistics, presentations, lists of faculty for consideration, and recommendations.

Salaries and stipends

Sub-series consists of records relating to faculty salaries and economic benefits. Activities and topics documented include salary policy, salary reviews, and market differentials. Records include correspondence, reports, reviews and recommendations, and statistics, including comparisons with other universities.

Appointment

Sub-series consists of records relating to faculty appointments, including policy and procedures, and appointment requests and recommendations. Records include correspondence, reports, policies and procedures, lists of appointments, faculty requests and authorizations.

Simon Fraser University Faculty Association (SFUFA)

Sub-series consists of records relating to the university's consultations and negotiations with the Simon Fraser University Faculty Association (SFUFA). Activities and topics documented include benefits, dues, salaries, consultation meetings, and negotiations on the collective framework agreement governing the terms and conditions of employment for faculty. Records include correspondence, reports, policies, meeting minutes, agreements, legal advice, and SFUFA newsletters and other printed matter.

Professional librarians

Sub-series consists of records relating to matters affecting the terms and conditions of employment of professional librarians at SFU. Activities and topics documented include development of the university's librarian's policy, salary, benefits, and leave. Records include correspondence, reports, statistics, policies, drafts and working papers.

Lab instructors

Sub-series consists of records relating to matters affecting the terms and conditions of employment of lab instructors at SFU. Activities and topics documented include salary reviews, and appointment requests and authorizations. Records include correspondence, reports, and statistics.

Teaching and instructional staff matters - general

Sub-series consists of records relating to various matters relating to teaching and staff, including salaries, benefits, teaching load, policy development, faculty discipline procedures, research ethics (including the activities of the University Research Ethics Review Committee), faculty exchange programs, contracts for services (including the contract relating to the SFU / Secwepemc Cultural Education Society program), faculty disputes, and faculty and university responses to the province-wide general strike ("Operation Solidarity") in 1983. Records include correspondence, reports, faculty handbooks, the Simon Fraser Student Society teacher and course evaluation guide (1980), sessional budget requests, policies and procedures, agreements and contracts, and legal advice.

External committees and bodies

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's involvement with the various external (non-university) committees, both standing and ad hoc. It is not always possible to determine whether the records represent the VP Academic's working file as a committee member or rather correspondence between the VP and the committee. University Search Committees

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's involvement with university search committees for senior academic and academic support administrators, including faculty deans, the Registrar, the University Librarian, and the Director of Computing Services. Sub-series consists of records relating to projects undertaken jointly by SFU and other universities and colleges, including Fraser Valley College, Cariboo College, the Shuswap / Secwepemc Cultural Education Society (SCES), and The University President's Council (TUPC), a forum comprising the presidents and senior administrators of British Columbia's universities. Records include correspondence, reports, proposals, budgets, meeting minutes, agreements, and notes and working papers.

Colleges

Series consists of the Vice-President, Academic's correspondence with officers of BC colleges, including the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), the University College of the Cariboo (UCC), and Kwantlen University College. Activities and topics include inter-institutional liaison and cooperation, and comments on college academic programs. Records include correspondence, reports, meeting notes, legal advice, and press releases and bulletins.

Universities

Series consists of the Vice-President, Academic's correspondence with officers of other universities, including the University of British Columbia (UBC), University of Victoria (UVic), the Open Learning Agency (OLA), and the Technical University of British Columbia (TechBC). Activities and topics documented include inter-university liaison and cooperation, and academic exchanges. Records include correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, news releases and bulletins, and agreements.

Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC)

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). AUCC is a public policy and advocacy organization for Canadian public and private not-for-profit universities and university-degree level colleges. Records include correspondence, reports, and AUCC statistics, briefs, news releases, bulletins, brochures and other printed matter.

Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT)

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT). Activities and topics documented include CAUT's 1971 censure of SFU relating to the dispute in the university's Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology (PSA) Department, university governance, faculty benefits, and development of research ethics policies. Records include correspondence, reports, news releases and other CAUT printed material.

Faculty Association

Sub-series consists of records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with the Simon Fraser University Faculty Association (SFUFA). Activities and topics documented include negotiations for the collective framework agreement, consultations with SFUFA on development of academic policies, procedures and other maters affecting the terms and conditions of academic employment, and the activities of the Advisory Committee on Faculty Salaries (1975) and the Advisory Committee on Collective Bargaining (1977). Records includes correspondence, reports, meeting agendas and minutes, agreements, and legal advice.

Associations - general

Sub-series consists records relating to the Vice-President, Academic's interactions with various associations in which the university participated or corresponded with. For a list of associations included in the correspondence, see "Access points" below. Records include correspondence, reports, proposals, membership invoices, contracts, questionnaires, and brochures and other printed material.

Student Services

Sub-series consists of the Vice-President, Academic's correspondence with, related to, or copied from Student Services. The Director of Student Services took over most of the VP University Services' functions upon the latter's resignation in 1977. Activities and topics documented in the correspondence include development of student services programs, including health and employment services; an external review of residence and housing in 1979; post-graduation activities of SFU students; and liaison with the Simon Fraser Student Society and the Peak newspaper. Records include correspondence and reports.

Financial Aid

Sub-series consists of the Vice-President, Academic's correspondence with, related to, or copied from the Financial Aid Office, from the period in which it moved from the Registrar's Office to the VP University Services. The Financial Aid Office was established in 1970, expanded its name to Financial Aid and Awards in 1989, and ceased operations in 1994, when its functions were transferred to the Student Academic Resources Office in the Registrar's Office. Activities and topics documented in this sub-series include Financial Aid's administrative organization and reporting relationships, budget allocation, and program development, including the work study program and scholarships. Records include correspondence and reports.

Vice-President, University Services - general

Sub-series consists of the Vice-President, Academic's correspondence with, related to, or copied from the Dean of Student Affairs (1969-1970) and the Vice-President, University Services (1970-1978). With the resignation of the VP University Services in 1977, most of the functions of this office were transferred to the Director of Student Services (see sub-series 3). Activities and topics documented include the administrative organization of the VP University Services portfolio, budget planning and allocation, day care, student housing and residence, and the cooperative education program. Records consists predominantly of correspondence.
