AIDS on Stamps project files

Series consists of records generated from the lobbying activities of AIDS on Stamps, a non-profit AIDS awareness initiative organized by Blair Henshaw. AIDS on Stamps lobbied Canada Post and the federal government to produce an AIDS awareness stamp for circulation in Canada and abroad. Series includes correspondence, newsletters, newspaper clippings, certificates of recognition, commemorative records, proofs of stamps in development, photographs, research and international listings of stamps. Includes records from the 11th International Conference on AIDS, held in Vancouver in 1996, and an obituary for Blair Henshaw.

Exhibition records

Series consists of exhibit panels with stamps, postcards and didactic information written by Henshaw, exhibit planning records, and awards received for exhibitions created and displayed at various locations across North America, including the Vancouver Public Library and conferences Henshaw attended as a member of the BC Philatelic Society.

Stamps and related records

Series consists of AIDS-themed single stamps, mint blocks, mint full sheets, slogan cancels, first day covers, comic books and related records collected by Blair Henshaw. Henshaw’s collection represents philatelic materials issued by 84 different jurisdictions.

General photographs

Series consists of slides and prints featuring images of Jim Rimmer, as well as various aspects and stages of the printing process and the design and cutting of metal typefaces in his studio. Also included is an image of Gerald Giampa.

Series consists of works created by others relating to Jim Rimmer. Included are articles pertaining to Rimmer; journals, broadsides and pamphlets set in Rimmer typefaces; and memorial books. Series also includes records relating to the staging of ‘Rimmerfest’ at the SFU Vancouver campus in the fall of 2006. These records include electronic copies and colour printouts of photographs taken at ‘Rimmerfest’ and for a video presentation at the event; writings about Jim; a guestbook; and nineteen broadsides produced by friends and colleagues for the event.

Series consists of material related to the promotion and advertisement of Rimmer’s typographic and graphic design work. Records include sample linocut prints, typeface samples, illustration proof-sheets, portfolios, and commercial advertisements.

Art prints and illustrations

Series consists of numerous prints and illustrations created by Rimmer as art pieces, as well as linocut blocks, woodcut blocks and stencils created by Rimmer to produce prints. Includes images of animals, people, still life, Frederic W. Goudy and keepsakes created for the American Typecasting Fellowship, (A.T.F.) and other associations.

Commercial work

Series consists of sample, draft and completed commercial work produced by Rimmer as a free-lance designer employed by various companies, organizations and individuals. Records include items completed by Rimmer for Colophon Books, including Alison’s Fishing Birds and preliminary work on Allen Ginsberg’s Meditations at Lake Louise; editorial cartoons created by Rimmer for the Williams Lake Tribune from 1960 to 1961; and numerous prints, paintings, and logos created for commercial purposes. Companies, organizations and individuals represented include Murchie’s Tea and Coffee Ltd., Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Air Canada, Vancouver Public Library, Hot Jazz Club, the band Heart, Whistler village, Shrine Circus, and Douglas & McIntyre Publishers.

Typeface design

Series consists of material related to Rimmer’s design and production of typefaces for both the Rimmer Type Foundry and the Lanston Type Company. Records include preliminary sketches, drawings in ink and pencil, transparencies, samples, digital print-outs, electronic files, master patterns, specimen castings, matrices, lead working patterns, and cast metal sorts. Some files contain notes and instructions for modification, and some include explanatory comments written by Rimmer. Electronic files were created by Rimmer on a Macintosh computer using the typeface design software IKARUS and saved to 3.5" floppy disks and compact discs.

Pie Tree Press publications and related material

Series consists of material related to publications issued by Pie Tree Press, including books, prints, and broadsides. Includes material relating to Rimmer’s work on an abandoned book entitled “Fred Goudy, Type Designer,” and the development and publication of A Christmas Carol, Shadow River: the Selected and Illustrated Poems of Pauline Johnson, Leaves from the Pie Tree and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, as well as various Wayzgoose publications. Types of material in this series include drafts, mock-ups, proofs, prints, drawings, illustrations, pamphlets, booklets, broadsides, linocuts, and master patterns.

Correspondence

Series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence of a personal and business nature between Rimmer and various members of the printing community, including Paul Duensing, Jules Remedios Faye, Richard L. Hopkins, Richard Kegler, Robert R. Reid, William Rueter, Andrew Steeves, Christopher Stern and Alan C. Waring. Correspondence includes technical advice and comments on recent work. Records also include contact information, thank you letters and prints, as well as correspondence related to various organizations, including the American Typecasting Fellowship, Typochondriacs and the Alcuin Society.

The series has been divided into several sub-series, which were created based on form. The subseries are: Notebooks; Notes and drafts; Typescripts and page proofs; Edits; Collaborations; Talks; Publications; Reviews and interviews.

Correspondence

Series contains letters and printouts of emails from various editors, publishers, grants, universities, colleges, friends, fans, and colleagues. Included are broadsides, cards, postcards, notes, invoices, as well as other personal and professional correspondence.

Poetry – draft poems

Series consists of draft versions of published and unpublished poems by Trower, as well as drafts of poems written in collaboration with other poets.

Poetry – unpublished book records

Series consists of material relating to unpublished collections of Peter Trower’s poetry. Includes an edited manuscript for a proposed book entitled "The Gathering: Poems New and Revised," initial and final selections of poems for a proposed book entitled "Through the Apricot Air: Selected poems 1969-2002," poems drafts and selections of a proposed book entitled "Smeltertown and Other Poems" (or, alternately, "Smeltertown and Points South"), and an aborted logging poetry anthology to be co-edited with David Day.

Poetry – published book records

Series consists of material relating to the developments, publication and promotion of Peter Trower’s published books of poetry. Includes edited and unedited manuscripts, outlines, correspondence, editorial comments, introductions by other authors, galley proofs, illustrations and photographs, and promotional material.

Series has been arranged into nine sub-series according to book: Poems for a dark Sunday records (1964-1969), Ragged horizons records (1976-1977), Bush poems records ([ca. 1978]), Unmarked doorways records (1989), Hitting the bricks records (1997), Chainsaws in the cathedral records (1998), A ship called Destiny records ([ca. 1999]-2000), There are many ways records (1961-2002), and Haunted hills and hanging valleys records (2002-2004).

Prose – articles, short stories and related records

Series consists of published and unpublished articles and short stories written by Peter Trower. Records include manuscripts and article clippings, including many articles published during Trower’s time as a journalist with the Coast News.

Series has been arranged into the following three sub-series: General records (1953-2002), Chronological files (1960-1999) and Coast News articles, reviews and poems (1993).

Prose – unpublished book records

Series consists of records relating to unpublished books of prose either authored or proposed by Peter Trower, including "Bastions and Beaver Pelts," "The Counting House," "Gangsterquest," “Busted for Pot,” “Kisses in the Whiskey,” “Vancouver Centennial Anthology” and “Wild West Coast Woods.” Records include manuscripts, proposals, chapter outlines, and screenplay outlines.

Series has been arranged into the following four sub-series, according to project: Bastions and beaver pelts records ([198-]-1992), The counting house records (1991), Gangsterquest records (1982-2005), and General records (1969-[ca. 1983]).

Prose – published book records

Series consists of material relating to the development of Peter Trower’s published novels and other prose collections, "Grogan's Cafe" (1993), "Dead Man’s Ticket" (1996), "The Judas Hills" (1996), and "Hellhound on his Trail & Other Stories" (2008). Record types include outlines, draft manuscripts, editorial comments, and promotional material.

The series has been arranged into the following four sub-series according to novel: Grogans’ Cafe records (1989), Dead man’s ticket records (1995), The Judas hills records ([197-?]-2000), and Hellhound on his trail & other stories records (2008).

Notebooks

Series consists of notebooks containing drafts and outlines of and notes for poems, articles, and short stories by Trower.

Personal records

Series consists of records of a personal nature created or acumulated by Peter Trower. Records include material relating to The Dylan Thomas Circle of Vancouver (an organization that promotes an appreciation of Dylan Thomas’ works), pamphlets from memorial services of Trower's friends, an invitation to Trower's nephew's wedding, and a photograph of Trower's former girlfriend June Boe.

Series consists of various works written by other authors, mainly those from British Columbia, either collected by Peter Trower or sent to him by others. Includes drafts as well as published versions of of poetry, articles, and essays. Some works contain editorial marks or comments by Trower, and some are signed by the author. Includes works by Joe Denham, britt hagarty, Patrick Lane, Curt Lang, Jamie Mandelkau, John Moore, Cath Morris, George Payerle, Greg Potter, Jamie Reid, Howard White, Jim Green, Carl Chrismas, Dorothy Livesay, David Day, and James Lewis, among others.
