The Writers' Union of Canada records

Sub-series consists of records relating to Wah’s activities as a member of the Writers’ Union of Canada. Records include correspondence, publications of the union, and administrative records.

The records in this sub-series have been arranged into the following two sub-sub-series: Racial Minorities Committee records, and General records.

General records

Sub-sub-series consists of records relating to Wah’s general activities as a member of the Writers’ Union of Canada, excluding those relating to the Racial Minorities Committee. Records include internal correspondence, publications of the union, and administrative records.

SFU [Simon Fraser University] residency

File consists of correspondence, notes, event programmes, student work, and administrative records relating to Wah’s role as writer-in-residence at Simon Fraser University from 2006-2007.

Me too

File consists of drafts and notes relating to “Me Too,” a text based on the work of Roy Kiyooka.

CBC [Canadian Broadcasting Corporation]

File consists of correspondence and writings relating to Wah’s participation in an episode of the CBC show “The Current” about mixed race people and culture.

Pays maya

File consists of poems and images relating to “Pays Maya,” a collaboration with photographer Richard Baillergeon.

Itchy archive

File consists of records relating to a 2006 event “Itchy Archive: Beneath the Surface of the Text” at Simon Fraser University Library, including notes and research relating to Jacques Derrida’s “Archives Fever.”

Walla Walla

File consists of correspondence, schedules, and travel and administrative documents relating to a 2006 visit to Whiteman College in Walla Walla, Washington.

Diamond grill records

This series consists of records such as writing drafts, notes, and research records relating to the book "Diamond Grill," published by NeWest Press in 1996. The book is a semi-fictional biography recounting Wah's childhood experiences.

[Fluttertongue 4 manuscript]

File consists of galley proofs for the book “Fluttertongue 4: adagio for the pressured surround” by Steven Ross Smith, and an accompanying note from Alice Moulding of NeWest Press thanking Wah for reviewing the manuscript.

Cap [Capilano] residency

File consists of correspondence, schedules, writings, and notes relating to Wah’s role as writer-in-residence of Capilano Review magazine, at Capilano College in North Vancouver.

[Diamond grill-research and catalogue]

File consists of 2 newspaper articles about Chinese cafes in the Canadian prairies, and a copy of the NeWest Press fall 2006 catalogue advertising Diamond Grill.

Selkirk 2006

File consists of correspondence relating to a reading by George Bowering at Selkirk College.

Winnipeg ‘06

File consists of correspondence, travel bookings, event program and administrative materials relating to the 2006 Winnipeg International Writers Festival.

Event recordings

File consists of audio and video recordings of events and interviews featuring Fred Wah.

Song room

File consists of poems, sheet music, notes and correspondence relating to the event “Song Room.”

Attention span

File consists of correspondence from Steve Evans relating to “Attention Span 2006,” to which Wah contributed. “Attention Span” was a “collectively-drawn map of the field,” an online publication where poets are invited to contribute lists & commentaries charting their current interests in poetry and related fields.

File consists of 3 drafts of an interview with Wah by Roger Farr, entitled “Surpise, unpredictability, and improvisation: an interview with Fred Wah.”

[Ink monkey manuscript]

File consists of one section of the manuscript of Diana Hartog’s book “Ink Monkey,” and an accompanying note from Hartog.

Maine

LRC [Literary review of Canada]

File consists of correspondence, poetry submissions, and contact list related to Wah’s editorial work for the periodical “Literary Review of Canada.” Wah served as Poetry Editor for the magazine from 2003-2005.
