John J. Verigin

This sous-fonds consists of correspondence, speeches and writings, by J. J. Verigin and about him, clippings, articles, publications, statement, brief, reports as well as photographs that provide insight to J. J. Verigin’s life as leader of The Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ (USCC) and the Doukhobor community. The sous-fonds is arranged into the following five series: Correspondence (1938-1984); Writings, speeches ([1939?]-1978); Documents about J. J. Verigin (1955-1982); Family related records (1944-1971) and Photographs (1939-[195-]).

Writings, speeches

This file consists of writings, appeals, record of conversations and speeches of J. J. Verigin, including his appeal to the Doukhobor community after the death of P. P. Verigin around [1939?]; a brief to William Bennett, Premier of BC prepared by the USCC leadership, including J. J. Verigin 1977; description of Verigin’s visit of Freedomites in Agassis in 1978; and his speech given at the Symposium in Castlegar in 1978. All documents are mimeographed in Russian.

Writings about J.J. Verigin

This file consists of reports and accounts of events with participation of J. J. Verigin, speeches mentioning him and his biography. The documents include speech by George Tarasoff; account of Doukhobors visit in Vancouver in 1967; statement clarifying J. J. Verigin’s role as material leader of the Sons of Freedom; a document titled: “Secret aims of J. J. Verigin’s visitors from Moscow” 1972; a document titled “J. J. Verigin’s activities – now intensified” 1975; short biographies of J. J. Verigin and Anna Markova followed by texts of songs.

Clippings and broadside

This file consists of clippings (1925-1926) that came from British Columbia newspapers and relate to the matters of Doukhobors and handwritten note that relates to article from the clippings. In addition, this file includes broadside titled: We appeal to the public (ca.1947?) by George S. Soukoreff and John J. Verigin. The broadside describes division and strife in the West Kootenay region of B.C. between Sons of Freedom Doukhobors and those represented by the Union of Spiritual Communities of Chrtist (USCC).

Speeches, writings, views

This series consists of documents that were written by P. V. Verigin himself or by other individuals relating his views and ideas. These documents include transcripts of speeches and interviews, petitions, opinion pieces on the Doukhobor community and faith as well as some of the letter-like documents with his opinions on education. It also contains 70 page manuscript in a notebook by F. I. Wishloff recording P.V. Verign’s speeches. All documents in Russian, except for a few documents supplied with English translation.
