[D.W. Standrod to Sophia and Simon Auer]
Part of Robin Blaser fonds
File contains correspondence regarding mortgage on farm land owned by Sophia and Simon Auer.
Part of Doukhobor collection
This file consists of a journal, a narrative by Saveliy Chudikov and a letter by Olga Birukoff to P. P. Legeokoff. The journal consists of Russian manuscript in lined ledger, pp. 17-294, with a narrative running from pages 55-179 describing in great detail events 1893-98 involving three Doukhobor brothers who were punished in various ways, sent into exile, etc. for refusing military service in Russia. Afterwards at least one of the brothers emigrated to Canada, eventually settling in the Kootenays. The author is almost certainly Saveliy Chudikov, one of the mentioned brothers, based on an accompanying 12-page unpublished typed excerpt based on the journal narrative signed by Chudikov. Covers loose, some pages at beginning and end torn out, but the narrative is complete. Probably written shortly after the events, likely after arriving in Canada, but before 1925, since a later unrelated entry in a different hand at the end of journal is dated in April of 1925. Extremely important unpublished narrative of the type of events that drew worldwide attention to the plight of the Doukhobors, and resulted in their departure from Russia to Canada.
