Background research records

Series consists of records pertaining to Daphne Marlatt’s research for professional projects, including those created for her oral history project with Carole Itter, entitled "Opening doors - in Vancouver's East End: Strathcona", as well as for her general writing and teaching work. Records include oral history transcripts, photographs, transparencies, articles, and other research records.

Series has been arranged into the following two sub-series: “Opening doors - in Vancouver's East End: Strathcona" records (1972-1988) and Research records for teaching and writing ([ca. 1965-2000]).

Fiction - poetry records

Series consists of records relating to Daphne Marlatt's works of poetry. Records include manuscripts, correspondence, and legal agreements.

Series has been arranged into the following six sub-series based on book: General drafts and related records ([ca. 1970]-2014), "This tremor love is" records ([ca. 2001]), "Winter/rice/tea strain" records (2000), "Between brush strokes" records (2007-2009), "The given" records ([ca. 1958-2008]), and "Liquidities: Vancouver poems then and now" records (2002-2013).

Fiction - drama records

Series consists of records relating to dramatic works Daphne Marlatt has written or contributed to. Records include drafts, correspondence, administrative documents, production material, advertisements and research records.

The series has been arrange into the following three sub-series based on dramatic work: "The Portside" records (2007-2011), "The Gull" records (2000-2009), and "Shadow Catch" records (2010-2011).

Non-fiction works records

Series consists of records relating to non-fiction works written by Daphne Marlatt. Records include manuscripts, newspaper clippings, and photographs.

Series has been arranged into the following three sub-series: "Readings from the labyrinth" records (1981-1998), "At the river's mouth: writing migrations" records (2008), and Reviews of other writers (1975-2002).

Awards and grants records

Series contains records relating to honours Daphne Marlatt has received, grants she has applied for, recommendations she has written for others, and literary competitions she has judged. Records include correspondence, brochures, advertisements, programs, and photographs.

Series has been arranged into the following three sub-series: Awards and honours ([ca. 2002-2012]), Letters of recommendation and competition records ([ca. 1984]-2012), Grant applications ([ca. 1965-2006]).

Series consists of records relating to Daphne Marlatt's professional activities, including readings, events, conferences, festivals, tours, and workshops. Records include drafts of writings, correspondence, administrative records, newspaper clippings, and photographs.

Series has been arranged into the following three sub-series: Events and reading records (1983-2013), Writer-in-residence records (1998-2007), and Workshop records ([ca. 1985-2012]).

Teaching records

Series consists of records relating to Marlatt's work as an instructor of writing and literature at various institutions. Records include articles, correspondence, administrative records, posters, student evaluations, lecture notes, syllabi, and other course material.

Series has been arranged into the following eight sub-series: Administrative records (1991-2009), Creative writing course development records (1989-2007), "Mother-daughter relationships" course development records ([ca. 1993-1999]), "Four modernist women" course development records (1993-1996), "Tradition and modernity" course development records (1976-1993), Women's studies course development records (1986-1996), Sage Hill Poetry Colloquium development records (1998-2010), and General course development records (1973-2007).

Electronic records and other media

Series consists of electronic records, photographic slides, video and audio recordings, and other non-textual media created by Daphne Marlatt through her professional activities. Much of the electronic media contains correspondence and drafts of Marlatt's writings. Some records relate to Roy Kiyooka's book "Mothertalk," which Marlatt edited. One video concerns the conferral of her honourary degree from Mount Saint Vincent University.

Personal records

Series consists of records relating to Marlatt's personal activities, including some works of others and responses to her writings. Records include correspondence, writings, land title documents, photographs, newspaper clippings, and brochures.

Personal and professional correspondence

Series consists of correspondence created or received by Marlatt for personal and professional purposes. The correspondence is with family, friends, and professional colleagues, as well as political authorities on a variety of issues important to Marlatt. Series consists of correspondence between Mary Billy and various others. Records include handwritten and typed letters and attachments.

Written works records

Series consists of written works by Billy and related materials. Records include drafts, notes, handmade magnets, event posters, newsletters that feature Billy’s work, Billy’s column in The Squamish Chief newspaper and two cassette tapes with speeches.

Diaries

Series consists of diaries kept by Billy. Records include loose diary pages and bound diaries.

Herspectives records

Series consists of records relating to Herspectives, the journal Billy edited. Records include correspondence, an index, letter of intent, calendars and the master copy for each issue.

Women's activism records

Series consists of records relating to Billy’s involvement in women’s activism. Records include Happy International Women’s Day cards, Defiant Women’s Support Fund records, awards, news clippings and photographs.

Accounts correspondence and invoices

Series consists of accounts payable and received by various vendors, distributers, professional organizations and service providers dealt with in the course of normal business. Records include: correspondence, balance sheets, invoices, orders, receipts, contracts, trade publications, and newspaper clippings.

Author correspondence

Series consists of correspondence between the publisher and various authors regarding current and future projects, editorial discussions and decisions, revisions, biographical information, book tour information, financial estimates and payments, and press coverage. Records include: correspondence, invoices, orders, receipts, notes, contracts, trade publications, photographs and newspaper clippings.

Book reviews and related records

Series consists of correspondence related to the marketing, reviews and sales of New Star publications. The majority of the series are news clippings of various book reviews. Records include: correspondence, photocopies of articles, newspaper clippings and cartoons, and trade publications.

Business operational files and related records

Series consists of correspondence with professional organizations, governmental departments or ministries, and service providers dealt with in the course of normal business. Records include: internal communications, external correspondence, reports, grant applications and awards, contracts, minutes, notes, trade publications, contracts, memorandum, and invoices.

Editorial correspondence and related records

Series consists of correspondence between the publisher, sub-contractors, vendors, promoters and authors. Most files contain instructions and drafts as to editorial layout, typesetting, artwork, etc. Records include: correspondence, style sheets, contracts, invoices, grant applications, editorial copy, galley proofs, newspaper clippings, magazines, cartoons, photographs and a poster.

Sales figures records

Series consists of balance sheets detailing book sales by title per month, grouped by year. The reports visibly grow more complex over the years as computerization and software allowed for greater detail in accounting. Records include: balance sheets, both handwritten and printouts.

Payroll and taxes records

Series consists of financial records relating to payroll, taxes and employment forms. Records include: financial statements, printouts, balance sheets, notes, tax statements and receipts.

Royalties records and related correspondence

Series consists of correspondence and associated financial records relating to royalties, book sales, manuscript development, editorial layout, grant applications and contract negotiations. Records include: correspondence, sales figures, balance sheets, financial statements, printouts, royalty statements, notes, mailing lists, book reviews, tax forms, grant applications and receipts.

Draft manuscript files

Series consists of one file labeled “Manuscript – A Very Ordinary Life”. The papers inside are annotated and heavily edited at times.

Invoices, sales registers and related records

Series consists of solely financial documents relating to inventory and the movement of books or products. Records include: cash and sales registers, handwritten balance sheets, book catalogs and invoice booklets.

Correspondence

Series consists of Peter Trower’s incoming and outgoing correspondence. Includes correspondence with family, friends, other writers, publishers, fans, media personnel, and granting agencies.

Journals and calendars

Series consists of Trower’s journals and calendars, as well as some loose journal and notebook pages.

Notebooks

Series consists of notebooks containing drafts and outlines of and notes for poems, articles, and short stories by Trower.
