In the course of its function as the institutional memory for Simon Fraser University, the University Archives has accumulated a sizeable collection of University records for which the originating department or creator is unclear or unknown. Although most University records come as scheduled transfers as part of the Records Management Program, additional records with historical value are occasionally accepted through three other informal processes: (1) staff and faculty donate material that their department may or may not have created; (2) the University Archives receives material without an identified sender (e.g., through inter-office mail); or (3) the University Archives duplicates and/or compiles material from different creators to aid reference (e.g., subject-based reference files).
Over the years, the University Archives has approached this material in different ways, whether in the form of separate collections based on material designation, ad hoc accessions to departmental fonds, or material in unassigned backlog. This collection serves as a space to join disparate collections, thus consolidating the Archives' holdings on SFU history, and to process material without a clear creator or Office of Primary Responsibility (OPR).
The material in this collection relates to the activities, events, people, and physical stature of Simon Fraser University.
