Fonds consists of correspondence, manuscripts, notes, articles, and promotional materials created or accumulated by Robert Bringhurst over the course of his career as a typographer and writer. The majority of records were created in 2000 or later, as the donor had also donated records to Library and Archives Canada in the past.

The records include manuscripts of several of his major publications, as well as draft versions and speaking notes for many essays written and talks delivered throughout his career. Also included is correspondence with friends, publishers, and colleagues, translated editions of many of his books, and promotional materials such as posters and brochures for many conferences, festivals, and other events Bringhurst participated in. The fonds also contains some personal records, including birth, marriage, and death certificates from his immediate family. A timeline of major life events and activities has been included by the donor.

The records have been arranged into the following six series: Biographical material (2013); Personal records (1913-2013); Chronological files (1954-2013); Correspondence (1971-2013); Manuscripts (2013); and Broadsides and posters ([ca. 2000-2013]).

Parmenides in Kentucky

File consists of a version the book "The fragments of Parmenides," privately printed for students of Kentucky Country Day School.

Ricou review 2005

File consists of records relating to Bringhurst's review essay of the book "The Arbutus/Madrone files: reading the Pacific Northwest" by Laruei Ricou. File contains issue 147 of the journal "BC Studies," which contains the essay, entitled "A critic in the rain," on page 103, a reproduction of the essay, a draft essay, and related correspondence with the publisher.

SFU broadside

File consists of a broadside entitled "The library opens its eyes," several reproductions of the broadside, and related correspondence. The broadside is printed with a short essay, and was issued in commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of Simon Fraser University.

Taylor prize 2004/5

File consists of correspondence, budget documents, and a press kit related to the Board of Trustees for the for 2005 Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction.

Campbell River

File consists of advertising materials and newspapers related to Bringhurst's participation in the Campbell River Writer's Festival in March 2006.

Reid foundation/Rammel dispute

File consists of correspondence relating to the legal action taken by the Bill Reid Foundation against George Rammell for his alleged infringement upon Bill Reid's copyright in a work of art.


File consists of materials related to Bringhurst's travels to deliver talks in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia: correspondence, speaking notes, event programs, and local newspapers.

Everywhere-June proofs 1/3

File consists of page proofs, annotated by Kate [Kennedy?] for the book "Everywhere Being is Dancing" and related correspondence with editorial notes.

Madrid Nov. 2007

File consists of materials related to a lecture delivered at the W.H. Auden centenary colloquium at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, November 8, 2007: correspondence, speaking notes, and an event program.

Miro illus [illustrations]-for essays

File consists of correspondence and documentation of the purchase of photographic material by the Fundació Joan Miró. The image is Miró's "Self portrait" from 1938, and the image is to be used in the book "Everywhere Being is Dancing: Twenty Pieces of Thinking."

Winterson review

File consists of the Books section of the January 27, 2007 issue of the Times newspaper, which contains a review of the book "The Tree of meaning," written by Jeanette Winterson, on page 3.

Lunde foreword

File consists of the text for the foreward to Ken Lunde's book "CJKV Information Processing, 2nd Edition," contributed by Bringhurst.

Terre Nash film proposal

File consists of a proposal for a documentary film called "Once upon a story..." by Terre Nash, as well as related correspondence, seeking Bringhurst's participation in the project.

File consists of the event program for the 2008 Pacific Festival of the Book, held from March 10-20, at which Bringhurst presented.

File consists of an essay entitled "Why there are pages and why they must turn," published in volume 82 issue 5 of the periodical "World Literature Today," as well as an annotated copy of the essay and reports with feedback.

File consists of a printout of an electronic article from the website "British History Online" about the English village of Bringhurst.

Corbeto corrections

File consists of notes and correspondence related to Albert Corbeto's essay "Eighteenth Century Spanish Type Design," for which Bringhurst served as an editor.

File consists of materials related to a 2009 trip to Ontario to participate in several events, including the BC Scene festival in Ottawa and Gatineau: correspondence, promotional materials, a contract, and an artist information sheet.
