Administrative history
Douglas & McIntyre was incorporated in 1964 as J.J. Douglas Limited, as Canada’s first B.C.-based library wholesaler. Scott McIntyre joined its founder Jim Douglas as a partner in 1971 and they began publishing books focused on western Canadian writers. In 1978, the company was renamed Douglas & McIntyre; it went on to publish over 2,000 adult trade, children's trade, and educational titles in the fields of art and architecture, Canadian literature, First Nations issues, politics, food and wine, and current affairs. At one time, Douglas & McIntyre was the largest English-language book publishing in Western Canada. Authors include Robert Bringhurst, Wade Davies, Emily Carr, Douglas Coupland, Will Ferguson, Fred Herzog, Jeff Wall, Bill Reid, Farley Mowat, Vikram Vij and Wayson Choy. The Douglas & McIntyre backlist and contracts were sold to Harbour Publishing in 2013, which continues to publish under the Douglas & McIntyre imprint.
Custodial history
Records were in the custody of Douglas & McIntyre before their acquisition by Simon Fraser University Library Special Collections and Rare Books in 1998 and 1999. Further materials were acquired in 2000, 2004 and 2010.
