Biographical history

Myron Kuzych was a Vancouver boilermaker who was expelled from his union and thus lost his job in 1943, after criticizing the closed shop principle (when an employer agrees to hire union members only). His case, financed by industrialists in BC and Canada, made it up to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London in June, 1951, where he ultimately lost. This case is important for BC and Canadian labour law because of the argument for an open shop and because it established that someone with a complaint with an organization must go through all the appeals provided by that organization before proceeding to court.
