University Communications and Marketing
Series consists of topical reference files maintained by the Media and Public Relations Department in order to respond to queries and produce articles for their publications. Examples of topics from SFU's first decade include teaching assistants, labour relations, and the Shell gas station controversy. Series includes news clippings, published articles, correspondence, reports, briefs, working papers, and other documents.
Sub-series consists of various materials such as Speakers' Bureau brochures, pictorial calendars, University Christmas cards, and other publications.
Two early issues of Takkali were distributed in 1965 before the university opened and were described as a "report to convocation." In 1968, the Information Office used the same name, Takkali, for a new monthly bulletin to faculty and staff about Board of Governors and Senate activities. In addition to official announcements, Takkali contained news of scholarly and academic activities such as appointments, and promotions, awarding of tenure, resignations, publications, papers presented at conferences, and research grants received. "Takkali" was one of the early names for the Carrier Indians with whom explorer Simon Fraser wintered on Fraser Lake. The word was also translated as "Navigator." The final three issues of Takkali were not distributed independently, but appeared as inserts in The Peak in September, October and November of 1974.
Series comprises correspondence conducted by the Media and Public Relations office related to its mandate and functions. Activities documented include liaison with the media (press, radio and television), liaison with University officials and other departments, production of publications (Takkali, Simon Fraser Week, Research Directory), production and distribution of University Christmas Cards, and the administration of the Speakers' Bureau.
Series consists of miscellaneous printed materials issued by the department and ongoing publications including Takkali, Comment, and SFU Week.

News releases and media reports
Series consists of paper and digital news releases created by Communications and Marketing and its predecessors, as well as compilations of press coverage about the university. From its inception, SFU regularly created news releases intended for public dissemination to highlight significant events at the university and publicize the work of faculty, staff and students. From 1965 to 2003, these were maintained in paper form. Around 2002, the university began to post the releases on its website, and the paper records were discontinued by 2003. Starting in 1970, the department also began systematically compiling media articles about SFU into annual or semesterly appearing Media Reports ("Simon Fraser University in the news").
Record types include press releases, media advisories, and copies of newspapers articles. The web news releases were captured by the Archives as pdf files; see sub-series 3 for more information about the digital transfer process.
The series is arranged into three sub-series:
