Publication files

Series consists of records relating to Duthie Books’ publishing activities, including their book review periodical “The Reader,” “The New Reader,” as well as catalogues, guides and various staff, customer and employee newsletters. Series is divided into three sub-series: Original reader files (1986-1995); New Reader files (1996-1999); and Catalogue and newsletter files ([198-]-1999).

Marketing files

Series consists of records generated by the marketing department of Duthie Books’ head office. Key staff members were Marketing Managers Scott Baldwin and Leanne Nash. Records document the organization of events, annual sales, the customer loyalty program, co-operative promotions, signage, and advertising. Series is divided into the following three sub-series: Events files (1997-1999); Marketing and promotions files (1993-1999) and Advertising files (1997-1999).

Press clippings

Series consists of newspaper clippings of advertisements, announcements, articles and letters to the editor documenting the activities of and publicity received by Duthie Books Ltd., including those addressing the subject of Duthie Books' bankruptcy and financial restructuring.

Duthie Books 40th anniversary project files

Series is comprised of records gathered and produced for the fortieth anniversary of Duthie Books, celebrated in 1997. Records include photographs, correspondence, notes, drafts and ephemera.

Business proposals

Series is comprised of requests for proposals, correspondence and proposals for bookstores in the following locations: Vancouver Airport, BC Ferries, Open Learning Agency's Knowledge bookstore and the Vancouver Writers Festival.

Ephemera

Series is comprised of ephemera collected by Duthie Books, Ltd. Ephemera includes buttons, flyers, magnets, a patch, sticker and backstage pass for a 1995 Bryan Adams show.

Artworks and awards

Series is comprised of framed and unframed works of art and commemorative objects and awards.

Bookmarks

Series consists of original bookmarks produced by Duthie Books. Bookmarks were designed and printed by artists and printmakers like Takao Tanabe, Chris Bergthorson, Hugh Michaelson, Reinhard Derreth and Barbarian Press, among others. The company published approximately nine million bookmarks between 1957 and 1999. A selection of bookmarks have been reproduced in “Duthie’s Bookmarks: 50 years of Bookmarks for Duthie’s Books,” published in 2008 by the Alcuin Society.

Mail orders

Series is comprised of correspondence, notes, inventories and personal mail orders for books fulfilled by Duthie Books’ warehouse. Records document Duthie's book searches, orders from individuals, and shipments of books to customers from across British Columbia and countries around the world.

Virtual bookstore venture records

Series consists of records generated from the operation of Duthie’s online bookstore, launched in Spring 1994. Duthie Books’ virtual bookstore was a browsable database containing 50,000 titles in 150 subject areas indexed by author, title, subject and ISBN. The bookstore was located at literascape.com.

Administrative records

Series consists of correspondence, legal and financial records, notes, manuals, plans, agreements, project files, customer survey research and other materials generated or used by Celia Duthie, as president of Duthie Books, Ltd.

Individual files

Files consist of notes from an interview with Nanad Kaur Johl, as well as correspondence and photographs relating to "The Four Quarters of the Night: The Life-Journey of an Emigrant Sikh" and Johnston's article on Tara Singh Bains.

Official sources files

Series consists of photocopies and microfilm of archival records on the subject of the Komagata Maru and South Asians in Canada, and handwritten research notes. Archival records were generated by non-governmental organizations; they include manifests, registers, and case law reports.

Archival documents and research notes

Series consists of photocopied and microfilmed archival documents generated by government bodies, copies of photographs, and handwritten research notes. Records include correspondence (including private letters of South Asians in North America, acquired through government surveillance), as well as telegrams, reports, press clippings from government department files (Canadian, British, Indian and American), and from Governors General files, Prime Ministers' files, and publications.

Records are from Canadian, British, Indian and American archives, primarily from Library and Archives Canada. MsC 183-0-3-0-0-6 contains a guide to most of these materials. The archival reference and origin is written or stamped on each document.

Articles

Series consists of photocopies of six published articles and one final draft of an essay, on the subject of Sikhs in Canada and the Komagata Maru, written by Hugh Johnston.

Scholarly work

Series consists of records related to Karasick’s research and scholarly work. Records include research notes, drafts, completed essays and some correspondence. The series is divided into subseries: PhD thesis, essays and pechakuchas, and conference presentations.

Promotional records - general

This series is comprised mainly of newspaper clippings and reviews, press releases and press kits, posters and other promotional material related to performances of various JMP pieces.

Kiss project

This series consists primarily of business records, particularly organizational activities, and promotional materials associated with the conception, development and execution of the Kiss Project, which consisted of a series of collaborative performances across several years.

The series is comprised of the following sub-series: Sub-series 1: Administrative records (1992-2001); Sub-series 2: Financial records (1995-2000); Sub-series 3: Grants/fundraising records (1993-2001); Sub-series 4: Production/performance records ([ca. 1993]-[before 2001?]): Sub-series 5: Promotional records (1994-2003).

ICE: Beyond Cool project

This series consists primarily of business records, particularly fundraising activities, and promotional materials associated with the conception, development and execution of the ICE Project, which consisted of workshops and touring performances.

The series is comprised of the following sub-series: Sub-series 1: Administrative records (1994-2001); Sub-series 2: Financial records (1997-2002); Sub-series 3: Grants/fundraising records (1995-2001); Sub-series 4: Production/performance records (1995-2002): Sub-series 5: Promotional records (1996-2006).

Fire project

This series consists primarily of business records, particularly fundraising activities, and promotional materials associated with the conception, development and execution of the Fire Project, which consisted of workshops and touring performances.

The series is comprised of the following sub-series: Sub-series 1: Administrative records (1998-2009); Sub-series 2: Financial records (2001-2004); Sub-series 3: Grants/fundraising records (1998-2004); Sub-series 4: Production/performance records (1999-2003): Sub-series 5: Promotional records (1998-2003).
