The Predicament of Or

Sub-series consists of loose drafts of poems and drafts of the collection of poetry published as The Predicament of Or. The sub-series also includes a small amount of correspondence relating to the collection.

Cereus Blooms at Night

Sub-series consists of drafts and manuscripts for the novel published as Cereus Blooms at Night in 1996.

He Drown She in the Sea

Sub-series consists of drafts, manuscripts and final proofs for the novel published as He Drown She in the Sea in 2005. Working titles for this novel included Harry the Egg-Man; The Woman Who Gave Love Birds as a Present; Once, A Raleigh Man; The Summer of Rose; and The Servant’s Son. The many drafts in this sub-series show the progression from first writings to finished work.
The drafts also show that Mootoo worked on her novel in sections, assigning alpha-numeric designators to each section during the draft stages of the work (eg. 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 2C and so on).

Video recordings

This sub-series contains 7 video recordings of various addresses and speeches made by BC Social Credit candidates in provincial and party leadership elections. One of the videos features tutorial on organizing of campaigns. This sub-series also includes digital video recording of promotional presentation of Jim Nielsen campaign.

Audio recordings

This sub-series contains 34 audio cassettes containing sound recordings of the various events and campaigns of BC Social Credit party. The cassettes contain recordings of conventions activities and speeches, including Premier’s Addresses. Another section of the cassettes contains presentations of leadership candidates in 1986 and 1991 campaigns as well as presentations mailed to the delegates. In addition, some of the recordings contain newscasts and news announcements relating to the Social Credit campaigns, recorded mostly from CKNW and BCTV broadcasts and Rafe Mair’s talk show. Some cassettes contain recordings of songs used in 1986 and 1991 campaigns as well as during the Premiers’ Tour events

BC Young Socreds

This sub-series contains records related to administration of BC Young Socreds organization as well as education and leadership campaigns of its members. The sub-series contains flyers, stickers, clippings, minutes, notes, executive members, membership lists, constitution and by-laws, resolutions, reports, promotional materials, constituency handbook, policy conference, events IDs, correspondence, resolutions, articles, memos, provincial affairs conferences, policy notes, campaign school, convention material, demographic analysis, Socreds leadership campaign material and candidates, Leader and Liberté newsletters.

Party office

This sub-series contains collected original files from Party Office covering constituencies during the 1986 provincial campaign. The files contain provincial campaign promotional material, correspondence, memos, posters and other materials relating to the 1986 campaign and Social Credit candidates in all British Colombia electoral districts.

Leadership

This sub-series contains records related to the Social Credit Party Leadership Conventions between 1986 and 1993. It contains candidate promotional materials, ballots, data sheets, party newsletters, memos, posters and photographs.

Year files

This sub-series contains records related to the Social Credit Party provincial election campaigns, by-elections, party conventions, constituency events and membership records. It contains: minutes, campaign and membership promotional material (flyers, stickers, news releases, lawn signs), correspondence, memos, party office material, statements, messages, speeches, lists, directories, by-laws updates, handbooks, ephemera, posters, photographs, convention programs, membership registration slips, newsletters, clippings.

Green book

This sub-series consists of a compiled book containing correspondence, court documents, memos, and news items on the subject of two legal actions that took place in 1990 and 1991 as a result of the outcome of a challenge nomination meeting in Burnaby Edmonds riding. It is unique for historical purposed as it will give a detailed view of the circumstances and outcome of a rare and unusual political situation. Specifically, while there have been judicial recounts of election results in the past, court decisions on nomination meeting outcomes are very rare.

Know your series

This sub-series contains a set of three books: Know your opposition, Policies and priorities, The Government record that were issued to every local campaign in 1983. They were both learning and reference aids to the campaigns in formulating local candidates positioning to the local voters, and were used in the drafting of talking points to be used at all candidate meetings. Opposition book covered statements and quotations on issues from the NDP leader and Ministry critics.

Reports

This sub-series contains reports published by the Electoral Boundaries Commission on redistribution of ridings to meet a widening population. The books were used to determine direction of the upcoming provincial election, and to predict outcomes based on detailed adjustment of results for the new ridings based on the previous 1986 election.

Press information books

This sub-series contains books and documents compiled for the publicity use to introduce candidates to the media. The Press tour information books a in pocket form. Issued for 1983 and 1991 election.

Policy information books

This sub-series contains books researched and created by Social Credit Caucus Research with intent to provide a ready reference for local candidate debates and engagement with local opposition candidates. These books contain researched policy points from both Government and the Opposition party (NDP). A series of books were issued in 1982 and then in 1984. The research materials were obtained by the donor from the NDP Conventions and passed on to BC Social Credit Caucus in Victoria. In addition, this sub-series contains study reports on various policy areas and other party projects material.

Constituency profiles

These books were assembled to serves as directories to constituency presidents’ Party Board, Party Office staff, MLAs and Caucus Staff in Victoria. The compilation began in 1977 and over time additions were made to the directories. Some directories were made for campaigns in 1983 and 1986. The directories listed all MLAs, MLA Offices, MLA Office persons, Ministers and key staff, Party Headquarters (Party Office) staff, Constituency Boards, the Provincial Party Executives (Party Board) and Women’s Auxiliary (WA and the Board of the BC Young Socreds. Initially, one binder was issued with regular updates provided about twice yearly, copies of which were provided to the well-established members. Internally, the party referred to these books as “The Bible” and to the original and updated versions respectively as “Old Testament” and “New Testament”.

Campaign manuals

This sub-series consists of various campaign manuals that The Party had issued to the local campaign offices to be accompanied by the campaign tutorial sessions. Each of these books covered a specific part of campaigns at the constituency level, canvassing, fundraising, media handling, phone canvassing and for the provincial campaigns level. Some of the manuals cover procedures and expectations for advance level officials, such like the Premier’s tour scheduled events.

Clippings, ephemera books

This sub-series contains newspaper clippings, articles and various promotional materials for the Social Credit candidates used in provincial election campaigns from 1972 to 1986 and the Social Credit Leadership convention of 1986. Besides the clippings, this sub-series includes: flyers, pamphlets, and newsletters.

Year books

This sub-series contains Year books that cover in detail activities of the BC Social Credit Party and BC Young Socreds. These books were made and added to as documents were created or received. The records contain circulars, correspondence, memos, meeting minutes, notes, reports, articles, newsletters, statements, poll records, lists, some financial records, maps, party logos, and other records. Some of the books contain internal records intended for the campaign managers and not for the public view at that time. These records provide an insight into internal activity and workings of BC Social Credit provincial level campaigns. One of the notable events that these records document is NDP’s promise to rescind the Restraint Program.

The majority of this sub-series contains the records created by the Burnaby Edmonds constituency (home constituency of the donor). Some records are general party records.

General planning and research newspaper clippings, notes, and photographs

Sub-series consists of general material relating to the planning and execution of actions such as unionization, rallies, or strikes, and research into working conditions and workers’ housing. Included is material pertaining to the Okanagan Farmworkers Group, collected by the Canadian Farmworkers Union as it investigated the possibility of organizing farmworkers and orchard workers in the Okanagan. Records include newspaper clippings and research materials, notes, and photographs of mushroom farms.

Photographs, legal records, and correspondence relating to complaints, strikes, and rallies

Sub-series consists of photographs, legal documents, correspondence, and other records relating to individual farmworkers’ complaints, strikes, and the union’s participation in numerous rallies and protests. Records include numerous photographs of strikes and rallies, and an audio recording of a protest.

Convention and meeting minutes, photographs, and other records

Sub-series contains programs, notes, minutes, photographs, and other material from the Canadian Farmworkers Union’s annual conventions. Also included are records from Farm Workers’ Organizing Committee and Canadian Farmworkers Union public meetings, including photographs, speaking notes, and flyers; publicity records from CFU information meetings held by support committees across Canada; minutes and planning notes from CFU staff retreats; and programs and photographs from external meetings and conventions attended by CFU members, including those of the United Farm Workers of America, the BC Federation of Labour, the Canadian Labour Congress, the Manitoba Farm Workers Association, and the Indian People’s Association in North America.

Reports

Sub-series consists of reports and briefs by the Canadian Farmworkers Union, its members, and colleagues on subjects including workers’ rights, workplace safety, and the history and activities of the CFU. Most of the reports were prepared for submission to government bodies such as the Workers’ Compensation Board and BC Human Rights Commission, political parties, or other organizations.

General administrative records

Sub-series consists of a scrapbook and other records relating to the Canadian Farmworkers Union’s chronicling of its own history, photographs of staff and the CFU office, banners displayed at conventions and other events, and other general administrative material.

Minutes and executive reports

Sub-series consists of minutes from Farm Workers’ Organizing Committee meetings as well as both national and regional (Local 1) meetings of the Canadian Farmworkers Union, internal meeting notes by various union members, and executive reports.

English as a Second Language (ESL) training materials and photographs

Sub-series consists of records relating to English as a Second Language (ESL) programs run by the Canadian Farmworkers Union, particularly the ESL Crusades, which customized English learning to farmworkers’ specific needs and brought the program to workers in their homes. Records include tutors’ manuals, educational materials, reports on the success of the ESL programs, photographs of ESL graduation events, and a photo book depicting farmworkers studying English.
