Brewery files: Victoria

Sub-series consists of research materials relating to individual breweries established in Victoria in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The sub-series include photocopies of business and financial records of the Silver Spring Brewery (files 8-10) and the Victoria-Phoenix Brewing Company (files 14-15); originals for both are held by the BC Archives. File 10 is an original Silver Spring receipt book from 1912.

The sub-series includes copies of articles from The Big Chief Brewerianist magazine; photocopies of correspondence, letterhead, and utilities work orders relating to the Doering and Marstrand brewery (file 7); some original textual records (letterhead, letter) from the Vancouver Breweries Ltd. (file 12); and an original copy of the Brewers and Distillers of Vancouver Ltd. Annual Report of 1948 (file 13).

Sub-series consists of research materials relating to individual breweries established in the Thompson and Okanagan regions of British Columbia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The sub-series includes a photocopy of the labour agreement between the Caribou Brewing Company and the Brewery Workers Union, Local 387 (1960; file 12); and a share certificate for the Phoenix Brewing Company (file 11).

Brewery files: provincial consortiums and national brewers

Sub-series consists of research materials relating to consortiums of BC breweries and activities and acquisitions in BC by national Canadian breweries in the 20th century. For record types, see the Scope and content note in the parent series description (F-316-3).

The sub-series include photocopies of agreements and reports of the Amalgamated Brewers Agency of BC (file 1); indentures and memoranda of agreement relating to the BC Brewers Ltd. (file 3); a copy of the 1948 Annual Report for the Brewers and Distillers of Vancouver (file 4); and a copy of the Fall 1977 Carling O'Keefe Vancouver Employees Review (file 4).

Files are arranged alphabetically by brewery or consortium.

Hops: research subject files

Sub-series consists of research materials relating to the BC hops industry. Some of this material goes back to Evans' work on his thesis in the late 1980s, but much appears to have been accumulated in the context of his work on the "Brewers Gold" project, a travelling exhibit on the history of hops in BC (see sub-series 2).

Topics documented include the development of the industry in various regions of BC (the Saanich peninsula, Squamish, the Fraser Valley, the Okanagan); prominent BC hops growers and associations including the Canadian Hops Growers Ltd., Henry Ord Hops Dealers, John I. Hass Hop Company, the Horth family, William Towner, Thomas Lee, the Downey family, and Isaac Cloake; Indigenous involvement in the industry; production techniques, labour relations and strikes; Japanese Canadian and Indo-Canadian growers and pickers, including the use of Japanese Canadian workers during World War II and the Japanese Canadian internment.

Records include Evans' correspondence, notes and working papers, and speaking notes; interview notes, and some interview transcripts (file 16); copies of newspaper and magazine articles, excerpts from books and publications; family history and genealogical information relating to BC hop growers; and Evans' paper on the "Origins of the Hops Industry in the Pacific Northwest" (undated, file 12).

Archival materials found in the sub-series include photocopies of business correspondence, minutes, memoranda of agreement, and reports relating to the Canadian Hops Growers Ltd and Henry Ord Hops Dealers; original payrolls cheques of the Canadian Hops Growers Ltd from 1931; and an original business card of William Towner, Pioneer Hop Grower, North Saanich.

Publications include the full 1990 issue of Orchard, the journal of the British Columbia Orchard Industry Museum (file 9).

Brewer's Gold travelling exhibit files

Sub-series consists of Evans' project files relating to "Brewer's Gold: A History of the Hop Growing Industry in British Columbia," a travelling exhibit using photographs, artefacts and text. The exhibit launched in 2003 and travelled for several years to cities throughout North America, receiving the BC Museums Association's Award of Merit in 2005.

The exhibit was organized by the Chilliwack Museum and Archives, but it was also a collaboration involving the Secwepemc Museum and Heritage Park in Kamloops, Coqualeetza Cultural Education Centre, Stō:ló Nation, Yakima Valley Museum, and the American Hops Museum. It received grant funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage, with additional sponsorship from CAMRA Victoria, the Great Canadian Beer Festival, Hopunion USA, Spinnakers Brewpub and Guesthouse (Victoria), and the Chilliwack Community Development Initiative. Ron Denman (Director, Chilliwack Museum and Archives), Ken Favrholdt (Director, Secwepemc Museum and Heritage Park) and Evans supervised the project, while Evans and Linda Eversole undertook much of the research and writing.

Records includes grant proposal, correspondence, notes and working papers; copies of archival descriptions and finding aids, artefact lists, photographs and illustrations; interview transcripts; copies of newspaper and periodical articles; and exhibit storyline, draft panel text, and exhibit-case design documentation.

CAMRA general administration and subject files

Sub-series consists of records relating to the administration and activities of CAMRA Victoria / CAMRA BC. Records include articles of incorporation, by-laws, balance sheets and annual reports; correspondence and surveys; flyers, posters, fact-sheets, and bulletins; photographs (files 21, 22, 45); planning documents; media releases and public campaign material. Sub-series includes both paper and born-digital files; media formats (paper or digital) are indicated in the file titles. Original digital file formats are predominantly Microsoft Office documents (doc, docx, xls, xlsx), with some pdf and image formats (jpg).

Sub-series consists of records relating to meetings of CAMRA Victoria / CAMRA BC. Records includes agendas, minutes, notes, meeting support and working papers. The sub-series includes both paper and born-digital records; media formats (paper or digital) are indicated in the file titles. Digital file formats are predominantly Microsoft Word documents (doc, docx).

CAMRA membership records

Sub-series consists of records relating to the management of CAMRA Victoria / CAMRA BC membership. Records includes application form templates, membership databases and lists. Records exist only in digital form. File formats are predominantly Excel (xls, xlsx) and Word (doc, docx), with some pdf documents. There are also three Microsoft Access database files, dating to around 2003. The membership lists mainly cover the years 1996-2005, with just one list for a later date (2016).

CAMRA branch files

Sub-series consists of records relating to various branches of CAMRA BC that have existed at different times, including chapters at Nanaimo, Peachland, Prince Rupert, Richmond, Vancouver and Victoria. Records include branch declarations, correspondence, balance sheets, member and director lists. Also includes 4 photographs (file 6) from the 2000 Caskival event held by the Vancouver branch at Dix Barbecue and Brewery. Records exist only in digital form. Original file formats include Microsoft Word (doc, docx), Excel (xls, xlsx) and jpg.

CAMRA newsletters

Sub-series consists of John Rowling's collection of newsletters produced by CAMRA BC and associated CAMRA organizations. Sub-sub-series 3 represents a fairly complete run of What's Brewing, the newsletter of CAMRA BC, from 1990 to 2010. Sub-sub-series 1 contains several issues of the BC Beer Front News, the magazine of CAMRA BC's predecessor organization, established in the 1980s in the Lower Mainland (see the CAMRA BC administrative history for more details). Sub-sub-series 2 contains a copy of a 1990 issue of the newsletter (also called What's Brewing) produced by CAMRA Canada. All records in this sub-series are in paper format.

CAMRA photographs

Sub-series consists of photographs relating to CAMRA Victoria / BC. Includes both analog prints and born-digital images (jpgs), and one photo scrapbook that has been digitized (pdf).

CAMRA artefacts

Sub-series consists of John Rowling's collection of artefacts relating to CAMRA Victoria / BC. Items include buttons, stickers, coasters, cufflinks, and two 20th-anniversary mugs presented to himself and his wife Carol in 2010 as CAMRA BC founders.

GCBF general administration files

Sub-series consists of records relating to the establishment and general administration of the GCBF Society. Records include Society incorporation papers, by-laws, and certificate of dissolution; proposals and reports; festival business plans, manuals, surveys, reports and budget papers; address book, correspondence, notes and working papers.

GCBF festival working files

Sub-series consists of records relating to the planning and organization of the annual Great Canadian Beer Festival in Victoria. The date range (1993-2014) reflects Rowling's period of involvement in the director organization of the festival. As a director of the GCBF Society, Rowling kept an extensive set of digital files for each year's festival, typically using the same or a similar set of folders to organize the records. Records include festival business plans, surveys and reports; correspondence with breweries, exhibitors, and the BC Liquor Control Board; application and order forms; budgets, invoices and donation correspondence; volunteer task lists and manuals; publicity and media packages. Records exist exclusively in digital form; original file formats are predominantly Microsoft Office documents (doc, docx, xls, xlsx), with a small number of pdfs, jpgs, and PowerPoint files.

Sub-series consists of John Rowling's collection of print programs for each year's beer festival.

GCBF photographs

Sub-series consists of photographs taken at each year's beer festival. In some years, beginning around 2006, the GCBF had multiple photographers at the event. The sub-series is a hybrid of print and digital photos. All print copies are located in file 1; the remainder were transferred in digital form. Around 2003 GCBF photographers shifted from film to digital cameras. Digital copies of earlier photographs are likely scans from the original prints or negatives, whereas the later images were born-digital. The predominant file format is jpg.

Sub-series consists of John Rowling's collection of artefacts relating to the Great Canadian Beer Festival. Artefacts include t-shirts, buttons, coasters, stickers, tokens, tickets, and Rowling's GCBF cap with brewery buttons.

What's Brewing news and columns

Sub-series consists of records relating to Rowling's published writings for What's Brewing magazine from 1995-2000. What's Brewing was the newsletter of CAMRA Victoria / BC, and Rowling wrote a regular column called The Hopbine, "a fresh gathering of news and gossip." Records are exclusively in digital format; see Scope and content note in the parent series description for record types.

Celebrator Beer News Magazine articles

Sub-series consists of records relating to Rowling's published writings for Celebrator Beer News, a magazine established in California in 1988 reporting on craft beers and brewing. Records are primarily in digital format; see Scope and content note in the parent series description for record types. Media format is indicated in the file title ([paper] or [digital]).

Eat Magazine articles

Sub-series consists of records relating to Rowling's published writings for Eat Magazine, a Victoria-based magazine covering food, wine and associated themes. Records are primarily in digital format; see Scope and content note in the parent series description for record types.

Beer bottles

Sub-series consists of Rowling's collection of beer bottles from various BC breweries. Pre-craft period examples include bottles from the Victoria-Phoenix Brewery, Sick's Capilano Brewery (Old Style Beer, ca. 1940s), Vancouver Breweries (Old Country Ale, ca. 1940s), and a Silver Springs Lager Beer from Labatt's (ca. 1960s). Craft breweries represented include Canoe, Spinnakers and Swans brewpubs, Phillip's Brewing, Tall Ship Ale Company. Includes a bottle of Big Bad John's Traditional English Barley Wine, a beer brewed by Phillips in honour of John Rowling in recognition of his contributions to BC's craft beer community.

Beer labels

Sub-series consists of Rowling's collection of beer labels from various BC breweries. Rowling created a scrapbook (digitized as file 1) presenting examples in roughly chronological order, ranging from early Victoria breweries (Sliver Spring, Victoria-Phoenix) through to contemporary craft breweries. In addition to the scrapbook there were a large number of loose labels grouped into envelopes. Labels for pre-craft beer period breweries are arranged in file 2, craft breweries (post-1982) into file 3. Within these groupings, labels are arranged alphabetically by brewery.

Posters

Sub-series consists of Rowling's collection of posters relating to beer and breweries in BC. Most posters originate in the craft beer period (post-1982), but file 6 includes two posters for the historical Silver Springs Brewery in Victoria. Other breweries represented include R&B Brewing Company (ca. 1990s), Spinnakers Brewpub (ca. 1990s), Tall Ship Ale Company (ca. 1990s), Cannery Brewing Company (2001), and Phillips Brewing Company (2011). The sub-series also includes a poster for Hopunion (ca. 2000s) and a 1997 poster on BC's Microbrewed Experience.

Glasses

Sub-series consists of Rowling's collection of souvenir beer glasses for breweries and beer events.

T-shirts

Sub-series consists of Rowling's collection of t-shirts for breweries and beer events. Includes t-shirts for Howe Sound Brewing, Spinnakers Brewpub, Tall Ship Ale Company, and Victoria Beer Week, all ca. 1990s.
