Scope and content
The fonds of the Instructional Media Centre consists of records created and received in the course of carrying out one of its functions. The activity documented is taking photographs requested by other university departments. The types of documents include photographic contact sheets, prints, negatives and slides. Appendix A1, "How to Find Archival Photographs" is available in hard copy form.
Fonds also consists of moving images and accompanying material produced by the Instructional Media Centre and its predecessors and successors.
Immediate source of acquisition
The records were transferred in a number of accessions from the Centre beginning in the 1980s.
The records were arranged by the Archivist according to the creator's original record numbering scheme.

Restrictions on access
Copyright restrictions apply.
Some files may contain personal or confidential information. Access to these files may be restricted as required by law. Files marked 'pending review' must be reviewed by an archivist prior to release, and as a result of the review access restrictions may apply. Please see the file lists and consult the archivist for more details.
Terms governing use, reproduction, and publication
Photographic indices and file lists are available. Most but not all photographic materials are indexed. Originally, no systematic indexing was done by the creator, therefore, no photographic materials were indexed by IMC before 1984. The photographic index that exists for pre-1987 materials was prepared by the Archives Department and is available on the Finding Aid shelves. Since 1984 IMC has created annual indices in electronic form. This index is available on the Reference Room computer. None of the indices were prepared using subject or name authorities to ensure the use of consistent terms.
See appendix 1 for a guide to finding archival photographs (hard copy version of the finding aid only, available in the Archives Reading Room).
Generated finding aid
Further accruals are expected. Consult with the archivist about unprocessed accruals.
Some of the acquired photographic material pre-dates the establishment of the Centre and its predecessors. These are negatives relating to Chancellor Gordon Shrum in his pre-SFU activities, including service in World War I (1916), graduation from University of Toronto (1920), and tenure at University of British Columbia and BC Hyrdo (both undated).
Fonds includes 3.2 m of photographic records, 41 film reels, 17 audio reels, 1 magnetic track, 1 optical track, 5 videocassettes, 3 pdfs and 1 .mov file.
