This fonds contains textual and photographic materials relating to the life experiences of Ajaib (Jab) Sidhoo. The contents of the fonds have been divided chronologically into five distinct series representing significant periods in Jab’s life. Each series is then divided into two sub-series: Photographs and Textual records. The contents of these series are primarily photographs, but correspondence, newspapers, magazines, personal memorabilia and ephemera are also included.

Most of the records originated with the Board or with Festival employees. Fonds consists of records documenting the organization and promotion of Vancouver's Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts. These include programs, posters, minutes, payroll and other financial records, agendas, licenses, contracts, tickets, fundraising letters, mailings, grants, and photographs used by Mayworks festival organizers from 1988-1996. Fonds also includes a thesis about Mayworks written by Aurian Haller in 2004.

Fonds consists of records relating to University ceremonies created by the Office of Ceremonies since 1982, and before that time, by the Registrar's Office and the President's Office. Activities and topics documented include the opening ceremonies for SFU in 1965, convocations, awards ceremonies, building and room openings and dedications, donor recognition events, staff recognition events, installations of presidents and chancellors, university anniversaries, and other special ceremonies.

Records include programs, books of words (order of proceedings), invitations, guest lists, correspondence, notes, press clippings, news releases, publications, photographic material, and other documents.

The negatives depict Hudson in his shops in Vancouver (Cambie Street and later Marine Drive), as manager of the Kingait print cooperative at Kinngait (previously Cape Dorest), and socializing in Vancouver, Burnaby and Powell River.

The fonds consists of correspondence from Cid Corman to Gael Turnbull; rejections from Poetry, Tiger's Eye, and Howard Griffin; and correspondence with Robert Singer.

After immigrating to Canada following World War II, David Macaree (d. 1998) earned his M.A from UBC and PhD from the University of Washington. He joined the Department of English at UBC, his primary areas of interest being 18th-century literature (mostly Defoe) and English composition, and remained a faculty member until his retirement in 1985.

Mary Macaree (1922-2008) qualified as a teacher in Scotland and then as a librarian upon immigrating to Canada. She received her Bachelor of Library Science degree from UBC in 1963 and became that institution’s head librarian in 1968. She retired in 1985.

One of Mary’s hobbies included Scottish country dancing and she also took a philanthropic interest in the development of libraries and programs supporting Scottish culture and studies. She and her husband were avid hikers and proponents of the outdoors, together they authored two popular books “103 Hikes in Southwestern British Columbia” and “109 Walks in British Columbia's Lower Mainland”.

David passed away in 1998, and Mary in 2008.

The fonds is arranged into two sous-fonds, one for each creator. The David Macaree sous-fonds is arranged into the following three series: Papers authored (1951-1986), Papers authored by others (1963-1998), and Robbie Burns research and associated notes (1961-1996). The Mary Macaree sous-fonds is also arranged into three series: Papers authored (1959-1964), Records associated with Scottish country dancing (1961-2000), and Records associated with universities and other entities (2005-2007).

Fonds consists of research material, scripts, notebooks, permissions and source footage used by Kovanic in the production of her documentary films. Suspino: A Cry for Roma was released in 2003 and directed by Kovanic and produced by Tamarin Productions. The film uses interviews, a profile of a refugee family, and historical footage in order to trace the experience of persecuted Romani peoples in Eastern Europe, primarily Romania. Other films in the fonds include Our Tears Run Red, Yellow and Green, Baboon Tales and Dreaming a Nation: The Kurds, from 1994.

Fonds consists of holograph drafts and typescript drafts of poems and criticisms, press proofs, notebooks (including Davey's childhood writing in elementary and secondary school), university essays, book reviews, records relating to a brief to the Applebaum-Hebert Commission (1983), drafts relating to various critical works, university course outlines and conference material, research material, "dream journals", records relating to the journal "Open Letter" and to Coach House Press, and correspondence. Fonds consists of records relating to the activities of the Social Credit Women's Auxiliary and materials collected by Flo Dickinson as a member of the auxiliary. The fonds reflects the role of the BC Provincial Police Veterans’ Association in maintaining the relationships and memories of the men who served on the police force. Records include written reminiscences, newspaper clippings, and photographs of the men in service, as well as documentation and photographs of the activities of the Veterans’ Association and the lives of members. Fonds consists of 89 scrapbooks relating to Grace McCarthy and her career as a politician within the British Columbia Social Credit party. Scrapbooks contain photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, press releases, ephemera, and other material dating from 1960 to 1991.

The scrapbooks document the political landscape of British Columbia from 1968 to 1991, in particular the activities of the Social Credit party; events, initiatives, and causes in Vancouver and provincially; state visits; McCarthy's viewpoint on particular issues; her political and charitable activities; leadership campaigns; and her personal and political relationships. They also document McCarthy's most notable accomplishments, including bringing Expo '86 to Vancouver, establishing SkyTrain as a rapid transit system, driving the construction of the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre, and the lighting of the Lions Gate Bridge. Includes correspondence with other politicians at the provincial, national and international level, including W.A.C. Bennett and Margaret Thatcher; her constituents, residents of British Columbia, and party members; and the business community.

The collection offers insight into the imprisonment of the “Sons of Freedom” between 1932 and 1934 at Piers Island Penitentiary. The “Sons of Freedom” Doukhobors began as a small, radical movement to reinvigorate the faith, restore traditional Doukhobor values, and protest the sale of land, education, citizenship and registration of vital statistics. They would achieve infamy through civil disobedience, nude marches, and burnings. In 1932, over 600 Sons of Freedom protestors were convicted of public nudity. As B.C. Penitentiary was unable to handle such a rise in inmate population, a satellite prison under the authority of B.C. Penitentiary was constructed on Piers Island to house these prisoners. The records document how the prison was set up and run and the problems that the federal prison system encountered regarding both staff and prisoners. The correspondence and telegrams shed light on the internal discussions of senior officials concerning the management of the prison and its prisoners.

Cooper during his career as the warden of B.C. Penitentiaries. The fonds also contains photographs which were all taken at Piers Island. The textual records predominantly consist of letters to and from H. W. Cooper regarding the penitentiary, staff, and prisoners. Fonds consists of records made or received by the Women's Centre in the course of carrying out its functions and programs. The geographical focus of the activities documented is the Lower Mainland of British Columbia and especially the Simon Fraser University campus in Burnaby. Activities documented include provision of facilities, resources and referral services; meetings of the Women's Centre Collective and the Women's Centre Board; correspondence and liaison with other individuals and groups; Centre funding, budget planning and management of its financial resources; planning and organization of projects, programs and events; and maintenance of library and reference material. Records include logbooks, correspondence, reports, account books and summaries, minutes and meeting support papers, brochures, handbooks, photographs, reference files and audio cassettes.

The collection was compiled by the University Archives staff to illustrate the construction of Simon Fraser University.

The history of Simon Fraser University is reflected in its world-renowned architecture. Located atop Burnaby Mountain, SFU's design was the result of a competition held in 1963 by Dr. Gordon Shrum, the newly-appointed Chancellor of the University. The goal of the competition was to produce five winners. One architect would be awarded first prize for the overall design of SFU, while four other architects would each be invited to build a section of the University under the supervision of the winner. All entries were limited to applicants from British Columbia.

The informal guidelines for SFU's design consisted of a directive from Dr. Shrum entitled, "Notes from the Chancellor," which was distributed to the applicants. In this directive, Dr. Shrum noted many of the features that he felt were essential to the new university based upon his previous experience at the University of British Columbia. Among his recommendations were that students should be able to move from one part of the university to another without going outside, and that the large lecture theaters should be grouped together rather than scattered over the whole campus. Perhaps the most important of his criteria was that SFU should appear in 1965 essentially as it would look in 1995. In other words, it should look like a finished university, but also be designed for expansion. The design chosen was that of a young UBC architecture professor, Arthur Erickson, and his colleague Geoffrey Massey. The four other winners were William R. Rhone and Randle Iredale; Zoltan Kiss; Duncan McNab, Harry Lee, and David Logan; and Robert F. Harrison. The Erickson and Massey design had been the unanimous choice of the judges, and had met all the requirements that Shrum had outlined in his memo.

The collection consists of photographic prints and contact sheets that illustrate the physical development of SFU including site clearance, excavation, the construction of individual buildings, and completed buildings and interiors. There are a number of aerial photographs. The collection also includes photographs of the University's opening ceremonies and the installation of Dr. Shrum as Chancellor and Patrick McTaggart-Cowan as President.
